I haven't been able to get Crimson drivers to work with my AW17. I'm on the most recent Catalyst driver set, but would like to upgrade for potential performance gains. Has anyone gotten Crimson drivers to work? I'm not even sure if they have switchable graphics anymore?

The Crimson drivers should work without problems when running in dgpu mode, my R4 currently is running with them. With AMD cards I would always suggest to run in dedicated mode since Endure works quite bad and has a large performance penalty.
