I have looked around but have not been able to find the best set up for WoW on a laptop using GMA X3100.

And before anyone says it, I am well aware that it is not the optimal video set up for gaming of any sort.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very interested in trying them out.
I am looking to increase my frame rates ... I have tried turning off as much as possible with no (I mean no) effect.

    I am running:

    ThinkPad R61i 8932-9XU
    Intel T5250 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo
    2GB RAM
    120GB 5400 RPM hdd
    DVD-R 15.4" WXGA 1280x800
    Intel GMA X3100 - drivers 6.14.10.4860 dated 8/9/2007
    Windows XPP SP2

dude, It even runs in Intel 855GM on low settings. 800 X 600 (around 16 FPS, but you get my point) Don't freakin worry. Just get a new driver (it matters alot) then max it out

To be honest, I had no even considered lower res.

Having said that, I also forgot to mention that I am running WoW: Burning Crusade.

As for the driver point, I checked the Intel site and could not find any newer drivers for my set up (downloaded what I thought were newer drivers and they didn't like my system).

Could I ask what sort of tweaks you have made?

Right now I am seeing 7-13 fps ... roughly medium settings ...

I run it on the laptop in my sig on low settings 1440x900, no tweaks whatsoever. I get about 20 fps outdoors, closer to 30 indoors. I could prolly get higher if i decided to lower the res but then the game starts to look like crap.

I don't tweak mine. I'm not in Windows at the moment, so I can't tell you when the 14.31.1 drivers are dated, but that is what I am running, on the machine in my sig.

I'm going to restore the original config from the factory and build from there again and see if that will help.

You could lower the resolution and set it to windowed mode so it's not so pixelated... I run on my Inspiron 700m with all settings at medium at 25fps. I play with the res at 800 x 600 windowed and because of the smaller screen, it looks good.

Yeah, the new x3100 can handle WOW no problem. One of my friend's VAIO's got the x3100, and with the new driver from Intel (15.4 I think), he can play CoD4 1024x768 with most settings to med and a 25 fps...really not bad a GPU methinks...

Get Intel's beta driver, go to control panel, uninstall your old one, install the new one and reboot....then Voila! You should then be able to enjoy WOW....

(I don't have a x3100 myself, but considering that WOW IS an old game and runs on GPUs w/o HL, I suspect that you should be able to play the game 1024x768 on med with 30+ fps with the new driver...)

I have a HP DV1000 with integrated Intel graphics. Plays WOW with no problem at all. No slowdown, nothing!

Hehe...like I said before, the game really isn't that taxing on the GPU..the reason why you can't play @ higher resolution is perhaps the limitation of the IGPUs...they simply do not have the amount of memory to handle games at, say, 1280x1024 even if the processor cores can process them. A possible solution...increase the amount of shared memory on your x3100...I know, ram IS slower than VRAM, but if that's all you've got, then I guess you just have to go with what you have....

REMEMBER: Unused ram is wasted ram.... :p

I have an Intel T2390 1.86Ghz and 2gb of ram with the X3100 and I'm not sure what sort of fps I should be getting or what settings I should run in wow. I have found the video settings very strange as when I turned up the texture filtering to high my framerate went up. I am running Vista premium but I set it to disable the aero when I play wow (windowed) at 1280x800.

WoW will run on pretty much anything. My girlfriend runs it on a mobile GMA950 at 1280x800 with medium settings and gets 30-40FPS indoors and 8-15 in big open/crowded areas. This is with maximum draw distance.

You can ALWAYS trust blizzard to make a very compatible game. An x3100 should have no issues.

Is that in XP or Vista? I find I get 15fps in shattrath for example but 25-30 in SW. I have texture filtering on high but all the draw distances set to low

I ran wow on an ATI 200m from 2005 and got decent FPS at 1280x800. An x3100 decimates a 200m so at that res medium - high should work ok.
