I just bought Asus G60JX. It's a wonderful rig. It has nVidia GTS 360M and Intel i5-430M.

I've been playing games on this laptop and have no problem. However, the high temperature of the GPU worries me a bit. During idle, the temperature ranges between 49 C - 55 C. Quite normal. But, when I play GTA IV, the temperature goes up to around 75-81. I used GPU-Z to measure the temperature. I also tried the software on my friend's desktop which has ATI Radeon HD 4870 and the max temp when playing GTA is 63 C.

Do you think that's normal for my card and should I be concerned about this?

NB: CPU temperature is normal, though: 38-45 during idle and never goes above 70 on full load.

GPU in laptops tend to get hotter than their desktop counterparts. These temperatures are still in the safe range. Believe me, they are not that hot. The 5870 in my G73 goes up to 84 (core temp), 95 (memIO temp) and 92 (shader temp) under full load. Granted, the 5870 is a higher end card, but GDDR5 gets hotter than GDDR3 also.

tijo is correct, and more so your notebook book runs hotter than many like. Your is doing well and below what the chips can handle. You are fine. Of course cooler is better but you are fine.

I wouldn't worry my dell studio GPU (HD 4570) goes to 100 C all the time.. maybe i need to be worried tho !!

In your place, i would especially if your card has GDDR3 or older memory, there's a good performance difference between the 360M or the HD5870 and the 4570. Your laptop may be a bit dusty. On some notebooks though, the thermal design isn't that good so components tend to run hotter. I'd take a look at the owner's lounge to see if heat is a real issue. If you're not the only one getting hot temps, you'll find relevant info in the dell forums.

On a sidenote, at first the temps in my G73 worried me a bit since i was used to the 9650GT in my N50 which runs pretty cold (idle temps 15-20C lower than my G73). It's better to worry and check if everything is fine instead of simply assuming it's normal

Are you overclocked? Undervolt it and you should be able to bring down the temp.

I have the same temps as you only with GTAIV EFLC. It's just a poorly coded game, so don't take it as an ideal case. Try another less demanding game and post the temps.

do you have a guide for safely undervolting a gpu?

ya its allright.. 75-81C is nothing.. i used to hit 90C sometimes on my 9600M GT but with undervolting tweak stays at 80C at most... but mine's a 65mm card while urs is 40mm so for u , those temps are allright..

    Thanks guys :D
Probably I am thinking too much.
I feel so much better about my laptop now.

Yeah, I think so too. It's only logical that laptop GPU is hotter than desktop GPU because laptop is more compact.

My laptop is not under overclock.
But, no thanks. I want maximum performance all the time :)

Undervolting doesn't affect performance, though if you go too far you'll get stability issues, and it might limit your ability to overclock.

I wouldn't worry about your temperatures until they hit the upper 90's to triple digits Celsius. Yours are perfectly normal and safe.

It should be quite obvious that the laptop hardware would get hotter than your friends desktop ;D

I think your safe right now. You should invest in a cooler for your laptop if your going to game for along time.

just make sure to keep ambient temps good enough, by running the AC when its hot.

If you keep your temperatures around 21C you shouldn't have any problems. Ambient temperature can have a drastic effect on your temperatures. Look in your user's manual, there's usually a temperature range for which it is considered safe to use the laptop. I wouldn't stress the GPU if the ambient Temps were around 30C though.

I've never had gaming laptop before that's why I don't know its temperature range. My first laptop was integrated. But looking at what people said 81 degree doesn't sound so bad anymore :)

It's summer and very hot here, my room temperature is 83 F right now. I definitely need a cooler.

    @sean473
Do you think Thermaltake reduces more heat than Zalman? I don't care about noise level because I use headset all the time.
