Just something I've been a bit puzzled over the last couple of days.
My machine is a Clevo (Metabox brand) P170EM with a 675MX graphics card.
Originally I bought it in time to play Bioshock Infinite at a sufficiently pretty rate, which it did admirably. And many other games since. But I have noticed that newer stuff is becoming a drag, particularly stuff released from people like Ubisoft who can't seem to optimize anything ever..
In any case, considering I am poor, out of work and therefore unable to upgrade my GPU (even if I could, I doubt it's worth it?), my laptop or even put together a desktop, I was wondering whether it's worth overclocking my GPU?
I only ask because I've never ever overclocked anything before. So I have no clue how and whether the benefits in my case would make it worth it.
If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Sorry if this all sounds like utter newb talk, but when it comes to the highly technical side of things, I suppose I am a newb.
Cheers.

Short answer: No
Best regards, hi9580
Just kidding. You can gain a decent amount of performance by overclocking the 675MX. Example: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/overclocking-the-675mx.697544/ -
With your card, I over clocked 675MX on core by 315 and memory 550 with NVidia inspector. I saw gains of 5-10 fps, which is worth it to me. I flashed slv7 vbios from tech inferno.

I typically don't leave my parts overclocked (Fx-8350 and Radeon 7850), but as you can tell by my low/mid range gpu; I don't game much. I find overclocking fun. If I've got some free time during the day I'll OC my cpu just for fun, kind of like a hobby. There is no real noticeable performance increase, but I don't max anything out by browsing reddit. You could squeeze out a few more fps by overclocking, but honestly with a gtx 770 there is no game you can't play. If my $160 gigabyte 7850 can play any game in my library (strenuous ones includes bioshock infinite, crysis 2&3, borderlands 2) at high/max settings at over 30 fps, your 770 is unstoppable. In all, overclocking is a hobby, not a substitute for some quality computer hardware or you can seek some professional help
hope i helped

Yeah, that was actually the last thing I read before asking here.
Seems like it would be a decent-ish benefit.
About this vbios flashing, is that something I must do before overclocking? As I gather the nvidia inspector thing takes care of the actual overclocking.
If flashing a vbios is necessary, how do I go about that?
I have a 675MX, not a GTX770. There's a big ol' difference between the two.
Thanks for your reply though. But yeah, for most of my games I'm still in the 30-70FPS I reckon, which I love. As long as it's fluid and stable. It's just I've been playing Far Cry 4 lately, and Ubisoft are true to their usual thing of having it run dreadfully for everyone. It runs between 20-40FPS for me I think with a fair bit of slowdown in some parts. And that's with a lot of the pretty settings down or off, sadly.
In general though, I'm doing alright. Just wanted to see how much more FPS I could get, especially by the time Batman: Arkham Knight rolls out. If I can't run that adequately I'll be so sad! Still, I have time. Maybe I can afford something by then...
In any case, so, I use Nvidia Inspector to overclock? And do I need to flash a bios thingy? That's what I need to know now, I guess! -
That Brooke guy appears to be a troll, so don't bother with him.
Flashing a vBIOS *WILL* be necessary for any kind of decent OC.
The vBIOS and instructions are available on Tech Inferno's website. -
Alrighty, good to know. Far as I can tell, the relevant stuff is below:
vBIOS: http://forum.techinferno.com/genera...-editions-modified-clocks-voltage-tweaks.html (Clevo 675mx (4GB) - 80.04.58.00.05_'OCedition'_rev00)
Don't have enough posts to get it yet though, eheh.
As for flashing it, I found this:
http://forum.techinferno.com/nvidia-video-cards/2166-[guide]-nvidia-vbios-flashing.html
Would that be about right, d'ya reckon?D2 Ultima likes this. -
Yes, that's correct. Use those instructions and good luck.

Cheers. Just gotta wait for the moderator to allow my posts..
Although I'm unsure if the files are exclusive to Elite Membership. I hope not. I don't have 5 bucks! -

Haha, oh good. Thanks for all your help.
-
Alrighty, finally done. It had zero effect on Far Cry 4. Other than perhaps keep the framerate a bit steadier?
But on other games I saw an FPS increase of up to 10, so it certainly wasn't wasted effort I suppose. Thanks for the help, fellas.D2 Ultima likes this. -
675MX? How much did you overclock it actually? I have a Quadro K4000M which is the same GPU and at stock (600) it gave me 3800 3dMark 11 points, while when OC'd to 900 it jumped to 5500. I'm sure it can go further, so , yes, the 675MX clearly has a decent potential for OC.

Based on this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/overclocking-the-675mx.697544/
+ 135 MHz Clock Speed
+ 750 Mhz Memory Clock
I didn't see anything in that topic saying it was safe to tinker further, so I haven't done so!
-
With the modified vBIOS you can go much higher than that. 100MHz on the core is nothing.
-
Oh really? Huh.
I've never OCed anything before, so I just went with those safe-looking numbers.
What sort of numbers would you recommend tinkering to, without fear of the thing exploding?
Now I'm even more curious.

The GTX 675MX with a decent enough boost to clockspeeds should scale better than the 770M due to having a 256bit bus. If it can OC to the same levels it is the better card and only a tad behind the 680M. So yeah an OC is definitely worth it!

So I'm hearing!
Just need numbers to work with. -
You might do well asking users what good OCs were, or checking later-dated posts about OCing that GPU. But 135MHz ain't anything to write home about. On my stock 780Ms, the max OC would have let my BOOST clock be the BASE CLOCK of an 880M. If the 880Ms had actually worked, that'd mean that an 880M would have been impossible to beat, as it automatically would be OCable and boost to 993MHz anyway.
Of course, with the modded vBIOS, I can hit 1100+MHz on my core, so screw the broken 880M piece of crapsauce.
But you get the idea. Anyway, temps are your main concern once you get that modded vBIOS in. Mayyyybeeee overdrawing power, but I doubt you could considering the specs of that card. -
I've searched all over but I can't really find much to go on, concerning the 675MX. Not really a popular OC device, I suppose.
Suppose I can just fiddle. -

Just go about OCing it like any other Nvidia Kepler card, EG 680M/770M etc.
The limits of your card can only be determined by you! Every card is different with different max OC values. You will have to fiddle to find out.
However yes it will certainly benefit you greatly to OC. -
Managed to get the Base Clock to +250 and Memory Clock to +700.
I experience problems if I seem to go too much above either of those. Still, with that plus turning all the FC4 settings down(which visually, surprisingly, makes very little difference. Yay for console ports..) my FPS is between 51 and 77ish now. So that's worth it, I guess.Last edited: Mar 4, 2015D2 Ultima likes this.
Worth a GPU overclock?
