I travel extensively. The majority of my gaming is done on a plane or in a hotel room. I currently use an Asus N81p, here are the specs:

    Cpu: C2D T9550 2.66 ghz
    Ram: 4gb
    GPU: ATI Mobility 4650 1gb ddr3
    HD: 320gb 7200rpm
    Screen: 14" 1366 x 768

I have to opportunity to get an Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-5570 for $600. The specs on that are:

    CPU: 350M / 2.26 GHz , Intel Core i3
    Ram: 4gb
GPU: ATI Mobility RADEON HD 5650 1gb ddr3
    HD: 320 GB 54oorpm
    Screen: 14" 1366 x 768

Do you guys think this would be a wise upgrade?

    Many Thanks

Imo, it's not worth it, you will get a performance boost, but not big enough to justify the upgrade. 5650 isn't that much more powerful than a 4650, if you can wait, the new intel Sandy bridge and the new ATI 6xxx are just a few months from reaching us now, they will bring promising performance according to early reviews.

The 5650 uses noticeably less energy and is definitely faster plus it has DX11 support.

If greater battery life and a speed boost are noticeable go ahead.

Yes, the 5650 and i3 are better. No, they're not $600 better.

The 4650 GDDR3 is still a very competent chip, especially at that screen resolution and below.

Save that $600 for something with the Mobility 6000 series.

I've got the 4820tG and I owned the N81p for alittle while too. It wouldn't be a huge difference. It would be a noticable improvement. The biggest upgrade in getting the 4820TG would be the decrease in size and weight from the N81p, and also the tremendous increase in battery life. Also, the screen is way better on the 4820TG.

If you value those things, it is probably worth the upgrade. If you don't value those things and wouldn't be using it on battery life, it wouldn't be a huge improvement on what you have now.
