    Hello all,

Some of you may know me already, for the others: I represent http://www.mxm-upgrade. We aim to make MXM cards publicaly available. Untill now, we have only been able to source Type II 6600's and 'Arima Special' 6800's.

But now we have found a source for x1800 and x1600 cards. But the prices are pretty high. Taking everything into acount, it would be commercial suicide to offer the x1800 for anything less than 425€.

This is a simple question to owners of Type III MXM notebooks: would you pay 425€ for the upgrade now or in the future? Please note this question is currently limited to europeans, but everybody is welcome to voice their opinion.

    Looking forward to your reply,

    Ice-Tea

Too pricey, but for MXM notebook users, it is a good opportunity regardless the price.

This is such a great news! You are really entering a new market in Europe. I must say that the videocard is too pricey, but does this include the price to built it in? Or do you guys not do that?

And something else, is MXM III only ment for 17" notebooks? I mean, can I replace my X700 (MXM II) by the X1800?

    Hi Charlie,

Just Type III, so 17" notebooks or 15" if they are crazy enough to design them in. I don't think that will change, even though I currently have a Type II alike 6800 (check the site for the 'Arima .

I'm more than willing to build it in, but obviously shipping a notebook back and forth will be vastly more pricy than shipping a small card.

I hope to find cheaper sources in the future for this card in the future, I know it's expensive, but this is currently the only thing I have ;)

    Hey Ice Tea,

One question, are you a company who is specialized in this or are you planning to buy 1000 pieces from ATI and sell them trough? Really interesting what you are doing, I respect it very much!

I have been looking on your website, you have a notebook open lying there. You have the wireless lan, RAM, videocard and 2 processors? How come two processors?

    Hi Hitman,

What I'm doing right now is hassle every company I can to get acces to cards. 99% I don't get an anwser or a negative one, but every once in a while I get lucky. Like this, I can offer some cards and I will be able to broaden the range in the future. I'm doing this on a fairly small scale right now, but I hope to increase that once I can make the new gen available. Apparently I can get the x1800 too, but not exactly cheap.

I have also contacted several Taiwanes card makers, and they informed me that they can run a batch starting from 1000 pieces. Needless to say I don't have the cash lying around to lock such a commitment, but again, when things pick up I just might do that to drive the price down.

The notebook on the site is actually Ikovac's ;)

How much would the x1600 go for? Am I right in assuming it's a Type II?

Very interesting question Flanken! The X1600 would be a great replacement for my X700, both MXM II...

Ice Tea, too bad that you have to buy 1000 cards :( Thats the way they play, BIG. You have to have a lot of money, and you have to be sure that a lot of people will buy your product. I wish you all the luck, you are doing a very interesting business in my opinion.

My brother also wanted to let people in India build cheap notebooks for him so he could sell it to students. They agreed about the price, but not about the quantity. That guy wanted my brother to buy 1000 notebooks, or else he wouldnt do it...

Did you try contacting ATI? Maybe they can help you if you tell that there is a huge market for mobile videocards that can be upgraded...

    Flanken,

I don't think the x1600 is a realistic option rigth now, as it is 50€ more expensive to buy for me. If you want to shell 475€ for it, I'd be happy to oblige, but somehow I don't think so. ;)

Before you ask: I don't know why this is ;)

    Hitman,

You probably won't believe me, but I met the general manager of ATI this week. ATI makes only a few samle cards for selected costumers, and they are x600 and x1400. Don't think there's much to get there ;)

The fact that it has a integrated GPU indeed makes it a bit unlikely :D

according to www.xe.com 425 Euros is = 543.39, so i would definitely pass on that...aside from me not having MXM, i cant justify paying 1/4 of what i paid for the laptop, on a video card upgrade...i would just get a new laptop lol

    pb,out.

Great to hear that you spoke with ATI! I am so interested in your work as delivering videocards to notebooks... Too bad you cannot lower the prices, this is way too expensive :( For 425 euro's you can get a X1900XTX... I can really understand your prices because you want some profit too, too bad :(

    Charlie-Peru :)

I wish you good luck mate! Such an interesting idea!

Well, I know this one is very expensive and even for 425€ I'm hardly covering my costs. I sell 6800's at 300€, which is proabably acceptable. With a little luck I'll be able to bring the price down when it becomes available through my 'regular' supplier.
