I know that the 7900gs is a better card, but for very light gaming, very light CAD, and mostly just browsing and DVD watching, how much of a difference would going with the 1400 over the 7900 be?

The Dell outlet has some really great systems with the 1400 card in it right now.

    This will be in a 17" (e1705/9400)

For light gaming and light CAD work, yes the Mobility X1400 should do okay. However, if you do decide to go for that graphics card, you might aswell purhcase an E1505 instead of an E1705. The E1505 has practically the same components, but it is smaller. Unless you really want the larger display on the E1705, I would suggestgoing for the E1505. Hope this helps.

I am DEFINITELY getting a 17" laptop. It will not be mobile, so I am going with the bigger screen.

Indeed...why buy a large car (17" screen with lets say 1920x1200 res) with a lacking engine (X1400 graphics), since the engine is gonna bog it down, so to speak ?
I think if you still like to get the E1705, get it with the 7900GS, otherwise go with the E1505 with X1400.

If that is the case, then you might as well go and purchase one with a Go 7900 GS, or you could consider a different notebook. You may want to consider the HP DV9000T as that model is better built than the Dell, and also has a Go 7600. It is a much stronger card than the Mobility X1400, but not quite as powerful as the Go 7900 GS.

7900 GS is better card. Though you wont have much 'mobility' since screen + battery life + heat + noise.

X1400 is for mobility really. But dependso n your graphics need.

I can recommend HP Nx9420. 17" display, X1600, and pretty low prices.

For very light gaming/cad your fine. And you won't notice a difference while watching movies so your fine :0 , don't spend the extra money. And theres rarely ever a 7900 on dell outlet while there are multiple configurations of the x1400 for very good prices at the outlet store.

For what your doing try and get something with a core2duo, 1gb ram, x1400, ultrabright upgrade screen, and a decent amount of hard drive space.

Go with the X1400. You said it yourself, very light gaming. The 7900GS is really a beefy gamer's card, and you won't need it.

If you aren't going mobile, spend a little extra for the better graphics card. The 7900GS is a beast of a card and it will give you enjoyment for years past an x1400. I know you are a light gamer, but even a light gamer fires up a demo of FEAR or something like that now and then. Might as well get the card that will consistently keep you happy for at least the next 5 years instead of one that will make you think, "maybe I should have gotten the faster graphics card" after 1 year. Think about it. Once you go with the x1400, you cannot upgrade later.

Also, most Dell deals are based on a percentage off of a customized laptop anyways. Sure there are those full package deals but they are normally lacking in many things like: maybe they have only 1 gig of ram but you want 2 for your CAD and multiasking work..or maybe it only comes with a 60GB HDD and you want something bigger? After you makes the configurations for what you really want, you end up just getting the same deal you would have gotten if you just used their percentage off deals on customized laptops.
