Don't understand this can anyone explain?

Below are the results gained from running 3DMark05 on the e1705, interestingly the GeForce Go 7800 had a slightly lower 3DMark score than the ATI X1600 256MB card but the CPUMark was better for the Go 7800 -- really though the scores are so close you can see these are equivalently performing graphics cards.

    Notebook 3DMark 05 Results
    Dell e1705 (2.0GHz Core Duo, nVidia GeForce 7800 256MB) 3837 3DMarks / 5849 CPUMarks

    Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi (2.0GHz Core Duo, ATI X1600 256MB) 4157 3DMarks / 4812 CPU Marks

Both machines have not been overclocked? And come with the original vendor drivers? But I do believe the X1600 and GO 7800 are in the same class, relatively speaking. The difference seems slight too me but...

dell underclocks their gpus, and we do not know if the acer that is compared is overclocked. also, you need to realize that benchmarks can't tell you everything about a video card's performance.

the x1600 is in the same class as the 7600go.

the 8204 comes with ATI's recomended clock and mem. Also you need to add 300 3Dmarks with the latest drivers (no overclocking)

I also thought that ATI's 1x00 series has significant shader improvements that are quite visible in 3dmark, but don't translate as such in actual games.

Actually, the Go7800 is classified as a high-end card for DTRs (17"), and the X1600 is a high-performance midrange chip. Dell just horribly underclocks it so it doesn't perform as well as if it normally would.

Compared to . . the Xx00? The X1000 series is a whole new architecture when compared to the Xx00 series, including the ring bus memory controller. The X1600 has more pixel pipelines (12) versus the X700 which it replaced (8), but only has 4 ROPs whereas the X700 has 8. Shading performance is still better though. The X1000 series is much more suited for newer games.

A big addition to the X1000 over the previous Xx00 is Shader Model 3.0 as well.

To put it simple - the Go7800 is a much faster card than the X1600, but Dell so kindly sends it underclocked (that is, below the speeds of which it is designed to run at) so due to that, it performs at about the same level as the X1600 in benchmarks. It will be faster in games.

as said many times, dell underclocks their cards, and when they test it, they are testing the 7800 at slower speeds..it will still be great in games, so dont worry.

    pb,out.

So overclock the 7800... problem solved. Kick it up to its regular speeds.
I have also learned that the 1600 can be easily overclocked by almost 50/50 both for chip and vram. Gives it quite a boost but with the poorly placed heat vent on the 8204 that i own it becomes a drag --> my hand literally burns at times...

If you're going to do any sort of overclocking with a laptop, I would strongly suggest getting a cooling pad. The cooling systems are only designed to handle a certain amount of heat, and if it gets too hot that is very bad for the hardware.

Agreed. I am going to do that.
