I have read all the benchmarks etc but what do you guys think? Can it handle all the latest games at least reasonably? Hopefully for the next couple years?

I am considering getting a laptop with one in it.

    Thanks!

Well, it should play most of the games for the next year or two. Definitely not at max settings, but at least playable settings. You should probably just wait a little longer for the x1650 or the nVidia Go7700. You can get them in the 15.4" or smaller form factor but they'll be more powerful.

From what I hear, unfortunately, those revisions aren't that much powerful than the current ones. I think it was nVidia's Go7700 that scored about less than five percent faster than a 7600. And I would imagine it's the same for ATi, too.

the X1700 (formerly X1650) is just a little more powerful than the X1600...most of the improvements are in power consumption and a new manufacturing process.

the 7700, on the other hand, is supposed to be good -- really good. for the best future proofing you might consider getting that.

however, the X1600 is no lazy bum either...i'm figure it'll be good enough for the next two years. and don't forget, even if it can't play a game at max settings...you will still get the same quality of graphics that you can get today. it'll just be that you can't get the ultra-extreme eye candy that hasn't been invented yet.

the 7700 is supposed to be almost as fast as a 7600 GT...check Meaker's charts.

Just because something new and stronger comes out doesn't mean that older cards are worthless.

You'll be able to game for at least a couple of years with an x1600. You may have to drop some settings as time goes by, but you'll be able to play.
