Ok, I did some measurements and made some basic calculations, and realized that if the MacBook Pro has a fanless (as far as I know) X1600, however underclocked and overheating it might be, then some of the thicker 12 and 13" notebooks should technically be fine with an underclocked X1700 or Go7700.

    The MBP has a height of 0.7", width of 14.1", and depth of 9.6" for a total volume of roughly 95 cubic inches. An Asus W7J is 1" x 12.4" x 8.9" = 110.6 cubic inches, and the Dell XPS M1210 is 1" x 11.7" x 8.7" = 101.8 cubic inches.

Since these two ultra-thin-and-lights (new catagory; its between the 14" 5lb thin and lights and the 3.5lb 12" ultraportables) already have dedicated graphics cards, would it not be possible to fit an underclocked X1600 or X1700 plus a fan, and have it run cooler than the MBP? Put in less memory if necessary, but I am sure that it would fit. These two have more interior volume than the MBP, so they should easily fit the added graphics card and fan. The rest of the interior components seem to be approximately the same: Core 2 Duo CPU, 2.5" hard drive, DVDRW drive, 2 DDR2 RAM slots, etc.

Does anyone else think this is possible? Discuss.

You're right, it will fit physically. But I don't think I would want a 13.3" notebook with the X1600...both because of the inherent heating issues and the small screen which would not be good for gaming. Also, it wouldn't be very portable, as battery life would most likely suffer as a result.

Seems to me like a 14.1" is fine, I mean its only .8 of an inch bigger not that large of a difference. Perhaps when the DX10 GPUs start coming out they will fit an X1600 equivalent into a 13.3 notebook, though I hear that the DX10 GPUs are less efficient and run hotter than the DX9s do.

You're labouring under a misapprehension... While the Macbook Pro does utilise a certain amount of passive cooling via the chassis, it is by no means fanless.

That being said, the go7700 is already available in at least one 14.1" model, so a go7700/X1700 in a 13.3" is theoretically possible from a thermal dissipation standpoint. Of course, how long the (often smaller) battery would last running a midrange GPU is another question entirely.

It's possible... but no one wants to do it...

Edit: Google ifixit and check out how tiny apple is the mainboard of the apple macbook.
