I've been looking into buying an HP nx9420 with a Mobility X1600 GPU. My question is how well will this GPU perform? Will it play games like Oblivion and FEAR well? How will it compare to the GPU in my desktop right now (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200)? Will I be able to play the latest games, even at low settings, 2 or 3 years from now? Or would it be a better idea to suck it up and spend an extra 200-300 dollars to get a Dell e1705 with a 7800 Go? Any help would be appreciated!

the x1600 is a good gpu. it will play oblivion and fear at mid-high settings from what i hear. i assume that it should be able to play games in the future well, but then there is the whole dx10 thing....

Hey AJR,
First I want to say this: maybe you should take a look at the graphics card comparison first before you post something. It keeps the forum clean, you know. No offense mate, but I hope you understand me.
Now the X1600 GPU is a great videocard. You can easily play Oblivion and FEAR on it. But if you really want to play the latest games after 2 or 3 years, then go for the 7800 Go.
By the way wait for Dell coupons and you can get a great e1705 with Core Duo and 7800 Go for just 1300$.

The X1600 is like a 2006 Lamborghini, and the FX5200 is like the 1923 Ford Model T cars............. see the difference?

A X1600 is a lot faster than a FX 5200.

That is a good comparison deedeeman
I like it, and its 100% true!

Thanks guys, i appreciate it...I liked that comparison as well.
I do think I will go with this X1600-based notebook, as the 7800 based notebooks i've researched only have 2 hours of battery life, whereas the reviews I've read on the nx9420 say that they've been getting 4 hours with light use. That 4 hours is important to me, since I'm going to be a college student. I'm willing to trade a bit of power for enhanced mobility/usability. Thanks a lot! -
i think it is a good idea. the nx9420 is very light for its power...and i hear it runs pretty cool and is fairly quiet. not to mention the superior build quality of hp business notebooks compared to the consumer line inspiron.

The build quality is another strong point i've been hearing.
There comes a point where you have to sacrifice between fun/power and practicality, and I feel like this nx9420 is a good balance. Especially since its easy to find from online resellers for around 1700 shipped. -

No problemo AJR, hope we helped you out.
Indeed, if you are a student go for X1600. Better battery, lighter notebook, smaller (not 17")...

I think the HP nx9420 is a good choice as well. Since you're going to be carrying it, having that extra durability that a business notebook incorporates is also important. HP's business line has great keyboards, another plus.
