I just bought a xbox360 and own a 8150 with a 6990m
I own(xbox360):
dues ex HR
skate 3
amped 3
nhl2k7
madden 07
shaun white snowboarding
PGR 3
halo anniversary
halo 3
forsza 2
crysis 2
cod mw3
tomb raider something
just cause 2
Now You have an idea of what games I will play, pretty much anything.
should I buy more games for the xbox360 or buy a 7970m for computer gaming.
my dillema is that my 6990m already maxes 99.9 percent of all games out. my 1080p 3d television upscales my xbox games to 1080p and some look very sharp like halo 3 for example. I was actually suprised when I put in halo 3 yesterday, the graphics were amazing the textures blew me away the same way crysis did. making me wonder just how good the next gen consoles will look, prob photo realistic.
does anyone know of a list of xbox360 games that are must haves, im interested in good 3d also. a list of games im missing that I should own? if you feel I should go the xbox 360 route?

I vote for XBOX360 games because you already have a powerful GPU in your laptop.
Good luck

Xbox360 games to have? the Gears of War trilogy and Battlefield 3 are my all-time favorites.
-
yeah, nothing wrong with the 6990. Right now, there aren't any games that the 7970 will make you like if you don't like them on the 6990. I think hardware wise you are good. All that's left is to buy games.
-
X360 games for sure as you already have an 6990m for now but as you know consoles are getting outdated. You still don't have THE DAWNGUARD for your x360 ???
-
Also, 99% of your Xbox 360 games are native 720p regardless of how it upscales. Something tells me we dont have the same standards when you are comparing Halo 3, YES THREE, to Crysis on PC. Halo Reach completely obliterates Halo 3 graphically and Halo 4 will look even better.
Must have 360 games:
Alan Wake
Forza 4
Gears Trilogy
Halo Reach -
Wow I will be in the minority here and say get the 7970. I have the rig in sig and a ps3/360 and can say on my 1080p TV the graphics of Halo 3 are meh. The lighting is good and that makes up for the overall graphics. I believe halo 3 and most 360 games really run at like 640p. upscaling doesn't really count. Nothing wrong with getting games but you can get a 7970 and ride out PC gaming until the next gen consoles come.
Personally I play many games online for a long period of time so I don't buy a ton of games. You could get a 7970 and then also buy Halo Reach used and play that for hundreds of hours online. Reach is MUCH better than H3 IMO.
And the next gen consoles won't have anything very close to photo realistic graphics; if current rumors are true. Hopefully we will get 1080p @30-60FPS with DX11...and honestly...I am not sure that will even be achieved. The FPS in Halo Reach is laughable (and it is one of my favorite 360 games so I am just giving facts) and it's graphics are meh @ 640p. The GPU that came with the 360 was ahead of it's time for all intents and purposes when it launched in 2005. The card that may launch in the xbox720 is rumored to be based on a low-midrange card of 2012. If that is the case....SMH.
edit: The 6990 is great but when you say "Maxes out 99.9% of games" I have an inkling your version of Max out may be different than mine. I have 2 580m SLI and can't fully max out BF3 with stable frames, Crysis2 drops into the 20s on Ultra with high res pack, etc. A 7970 is about as powerful as my 2 580Ms. -

Any game that has a PC version available, definitely get the PC version instead of the console version, otherwise you will be limited to 1280x720 (or lower) render resolution, no AA or 2xAA, no AF, low quality shadows, low res assets and textures, etc.

I am used to pc gaming at 1080p and realise it's sharper. but when your sitting back 6 feet its hard to tell the differance. 720p 6 feet away= 1080p one foot away. halo 3 impressed me alot only on first level as im not a hardcore gamer. \I can only play for half an hour at a time. I will buy reach as Ive read its the best halo. Im dying to see the next consoles as microsoft promised avatar level graphics with its next xbox 8. I wish they would just realse the damn thing so that pc games can benefit as well. I will be hooking up my laptop to my 3d tv and hope 1080p games will look better but i have my doubts as im sitting 6 feet away so i can see the full screen.
so thanks for the help
gears off war
halo reach
any others worth buying?
ps i just bought fallout 3 and batman arkham city -
There is a world of difference between PC graphics and console graphics. Xbox360 is ancient tech by today's standards. If you're saying it's hard to tell the difference I suspect either your standards are low or there is something wrong with your display/vision. Get the 7970, it's roughly a 50% performance improvement over the 6990 and is better power- and heat-wise.
Also, if you're saying the 6990 copes with everything, either you haven't turned up the settings or aren't playing demanding games. -
sarge what game are you refering to? metro 2033? I hate that game and Im referring to all games with aa disabled as on a 15inch screen with 1080p resolution it makes 0 diff. and no their is nothing wrong with my vison.
ps. read my post again and use grey matter. hint is 6. -
Thank you, that is exactly what my post above reads as well. Also OP, why did you buy the Xbox version of Batman when the PC version is much better? I just got Batman AA and with DX11 @1080P, it is much cleaner than the 360. I have a 55in 1080P Samsung to my ps3 and 360. I promise you, the games, 6ft away, is NOT equal to 1080p on a laptop. Your statement does have some value to it as the closer you sit the better you need the clarity, however, 1080p is DOUBLE the amount of pixels. Add to that the fact that Halo and COD, BF3 etc run at 640p then you have an even greater disparity. Add to that the limitations of ram and the texture sacrifices that occur and you have an inferior looking game. Plain and simple.
And try not to believe the marketing hype. Sony did it too with "The next generation starts when we say it does" "The ps3 will deliver 1080p at 120FPS a second" blah blah blah.
Bottom line; you should have upgraded your GPU so it actually CAN max out games. A single 6990 will not. Dat Dere is the truth. Open your eyes Neo. -
OK so do you hate BF3? Do you hate Crysis 2? Sorry you are NOT playing that at 1080p on Ultra with high res pack. Why? Because people with DUAL 6990s barely hit acceptable frames. My 580M SLI barely has sustainable FPS on Crysis 2 (a game you like). And yes...AA is disabled as well.
So RECAP:
1. Max is not some "subjective term" that you can use but sacrifice AA/AF and still consider it "max." Max is quite simple; HIGHEST settings.
2. A single 6990 is not maxing or even playing Crysis 2 with highest settings but no AA/AF
3. Re-read my other posts.

6. U mad? -
lol we are not going to argue.
I mean I can have the max graphics in the term adding tesslation adds nothing to the clairity or detail, graphics I mean detail. sometimes you can lower shadows and keep maximum detail. yes I realize it cannot max every game but I dont mind turning down a setting or two that does not impact detail aka graphics. Im old school and my terms for graphics is differant than a noobs term for simply cranking the settings and not using his/her eyes as the gauge as to what maximum is.
take crysis for example. turn down shadows to high and shaders down to high and you will easily average 60fps with 0 visual loss. Unless you of course think a minute color tint is worth it.....fly at her.. each to his own.
I use my eyes..most noobs use settings
and yea maybe your right about clairity with 1080p vs 720p 640p at 6 feet away ect. Im getting my laptop back soon and this might be good news as id love to have an even sharper image.. i own just about every pc game known to man and am excited to try them out using tridef3d.
ps. Is it cool or something to say max? or cool to say im maxing a game? I think its cooler playing the game with the highest details for enjoyment vs simply saying i max everygame, take the witcher 2 for example does anyone really care if they max the game or not? uber sampling and all...I dont for one and thats the way I am.
people are differant and i prefer my opinion with an open mind -
any games i should pick up?
-
Just to be sure, you're asking which 360 games you should get that you can't get on PC?
I was going to suggest Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY or Half Life 2 and it's episodes but you can play those on your 6990M laptop and just get them from Steam. Outside of that list you posted in the OP there is a mountain of good games. Not sure what you're looking for exactly. This thread would go on into infinity trying to suggest games.
-
Tridef3d or any other 3D technology cuts the framerate in half. You would definitely want a 7970m at least.
I have no idea why would anyone want to play a game on an old console when it's available on the PC. You can connect the laptop to the telly as well, you know. -
i dont have my laptop back yet...how will it look on a 47 inch led 1080p tv?
-
i must say i'm somewhat biased here in this argument. I sold my XBox as aside from Halo, their best exclusives were also available on the PC, and played much better on one. I'm also a mouse and keyboard guy who can circle strafe with the best of them. I never found a controller that can match the precision and accuracy.
. -
yea i prefer the mouse also!
is their a way to hook up my laptop and leave it on so i could just sit on the couch and use a wireless keyboard and mouse? -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
It's not really simple. Although you can turn down AA/AF, you can also turn them up extremely high, and you can turn on other effects or AA modes like SSAA - which can destroy performance even for high end cards with some image quality benefit. So perhaps no one can play on max settings? -
Miles better. As sharp as it gets on a FullHD telly. 640p vs 1080p is almost 3 times more the amount of pixels.Of course.
1) Hook up your laptop.
2) Sit on a couch.
3) Use a wireless keyboard and mouse. -
It's the opposite, it's noobs that think turning down settings doesn't affect visual fidelity. Maybe you are experiencing some sort of cognitive dissonance in which you are trying to justify your own limitations..I don't know. I am merely answering your questions. Turning off Tessellation does impact visual fidelity; yes even in Crysis2. Yes even in Witcher2. Yes even in...well every DX11 game. Turning down shadows and shaders are two of the worst moves to make when sacrificing visual fidelity. Any "noob" knows that. AA/AF, particle effects and motion blur should go way before you get to the main visual enhancers (shaders and shadows). So you sound ridiculous with that statement that turning down shadows has "no" impact to the eye. Turning down the shadows ALONE in BF3 COMPLETELY changes the look of the game.
So maybe you should just rescind and realize that you are not quite the videophile you think you are.
Most importantly, my 3rd "bold" that I highlighted for you is just pure irony. YOU were the one saying you "max 99.9% of games out there" in your OP. So I was challenging that in TRYING to help you with your decision.
A 7970 is a MUCH better investment (and resale value) then getting a bunch of xbox games (that are mostly on the PC)...and you MOSTLY like shooters....
