I have saved up $1,000 and want to get the best graphics card out there. I have narrowed it down to these two. Any opinions greatly apprecciated. Thanks

I'd go with the XFX. Personally, I have never had any problems with any of their cards. Very reliable products from a good company.
-
ultra it up! its the most powerful on the market
-
Well you could always wait for the 9800 that comes out in November, or save some money by getting the 8800 GTX and overclocking it to Ultra speeds.
-
I would just get an 8700 right now, it's not worth the wait for the 8800 to come out because no one knows if it really is.
-
wait for 9800, its only couple of month away, and do not buy 8800 ultra, its so overpriced for its performance level.
-
@jessi3k3 : I'm gonna say that I think he's talking about desktop cards, the 8800 isn't out for laptops and I have yet to hear about choices of brands for laptop vid cards.
-
SLI them...lol (I dont evenknow if thats possible).
-
Get a factory overclocked 8800GTX. You'll have some money left over for a faster CPU or more RAM.
-
Just wondering is there that much of a difference between the two?
-
I have a feeling even the 8800GTS can handle pretty much everything out there right now. My card runs Bioshock at 1920x1200 resolution, max settings, on my 24 inch Dell monitor. An 8800GTX would be more than enough I think. The Ultra seems like overkill for a part that you'll probably want to get rid of in a year
Go with the XFX GTX if you can as I like their brand and warranty offer. -
Ok teh diffrence between the two is this.
at stock speed the GTX = 576mhz Core & 1800mhz Mem
at stock speed the Ultra = 612mhz Core & 2100mhz Mem
Now my overclocked GTX = 641mhz core & 2100mhz Mem
But you can overclock Ultra's to like = 670 - 680mhz core & 2300mhz mem
And really a stock GTX dominates all games nothing slows it down add the fact you can give them a major overclock and they smash down stock ultra cards. But then the overclocked Ultra cards are just unbeatable currently.
Also why is everyone so sure Nvidia will be releasing the 9800 in November?
Wouldn't it make more sense for them to release a 8900?
There original forecast that doesn't seem to have changed is that its 2 years for a new generation to come out. Seeing as in November the 8800s will be a year old it seems highly unlikely they will have a totally new generation. And much more likely they will release a higher end 8 series product.
I've even read a few things saying they might release the 9800 but in reality it will be a 8 series part.
And if you think it will be the 9800 becasue the nv98 is appearing in all their drivers think about Nvidia's naming scheme. Their fastest parts of each generation are the lowest numbers. nv70 is fastest of the geforce 7 family followed by nv74 & nv75. the g80 is the fastest 8 series chip followed by g84 , g85 & g86. So if Nvidia wants to release a new generation by there naming scheme which hasn't changed for as long as I can remember it would be a g90 or nv90 part. not a 98. 98 would be reserved for a second revision to the top 9 series part. -
I'd worry less about brand and more about specs and past reliability as they're just about all built in the same factory.
-
I personally don't feel the 9 series graphics cards are going to be released this year, but anything is possible. nVidia may feel under pressure to produce something that can power the latest DX10 at full pelt, something most of their current DX10 range doesn't do so well.
Also, the pressure is on nVidia and ATI again, from eact other. ATI's R700 will be based alot on the current R600, so its perfection in terms of core stabiloty was neccesary. nVidia and ATI, both for the same reason, will have already begun work on their next generation cards. -
XFX NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB or BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB
