I'm still using 32 bit XP on my late 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.4GHz, 256MB 9600m GT, 2GB RAM, and I'm wondering since I am do for an Apple Care and RAM upgrade if I should make the jump to 4GB and a 64-bit OS. Will I see much of a performance boost (or hit) if I make the switch?

Like I said If you don't want to wait untill Windows7 is ready you can try Vista. And Yes upgrade to 4GB RAM and 64-Bit will bee smooth...
-
Make the move to Windows 7 64-bit. You really have nothing to gain by staying with XP. It's old, and support for it will fade. And you will never be able to use more than 4GB with it.

I recently made the switch from exactly XP 32-bit to RC Win 7 64 bit. I didn't upgrade my RAM, but so far I see no performance penalty, and I am loving the faster boot up speed, and response time. I say just do it.

Ive moved from XP to Vista x64 and with a 300 point 3dmark 06 difference im not losing much with my old games, note that I actually put XP on this laptop afterwards to bench between. My XP computer wasnt this powerful anyways.
Heard some games not working on 7 that worked on Vista, have tested the RC but other then benches which came out within a point of each other on both ends never tested any games on it. -
Yeah, some users raport crash, frezzeing ect.
It is still beta... -

Actually its not Beta, it should be regarded as such to a production environment. But a release candidate is farther than a beta. Its a point at which they say, we think its ready to ship but help us find the other major problems.
The games will more likley need patching and work arounds then 7 will need to fix "bugs". Games are written to the operating system not the otherway around, alot of software is written with hacks to work on this version of windows, and then do the same thing but another way or even a better way on another version. Microsoft will do some things to make it easier on their own customers but generally leave the rest up to the msdn crew providing support to subscribers on updating their own software.
To be honest i think Vista 32 RC 1 was better on my last machine then the RTM was. -
What I wanted to say it is not "stable" enough to use as main OS. I have also tried it, I got problems with drivers... And a new build leaks every week to torrent's so someting must be "wrong"

Really the point when it hits RTM is when they can compromise and say we will fix the rest next Tuesday. Could patch it for ever, problems and compatibility could one day be fixed, but security patches are an eternal thing.
Runs stable over here, as i said never tried actual gaming. Just waiting for ASUS to patch up its software, which yes mostly needs patching by asus to work. Some companies are known for reverse engineering undocument API's and when micosoft changes the API in the next version or an update to an existing OS, that software using it has issues. -
you can use DX10 on windows xp x86 and x64... just install the mod.
XP 32-bit or Win7 64-bit for gaming?
