Probably one of the strangest match out there. I own both of these so I figured I could actually compare them and help people decide which one they`d like as a gaming laptop.
Configs : Sager 5791 : 2.2 C2D T7500, 512 7950GTX,2gb RAM,120 Gb 5400 rpm hdd.
Dell XPS 1730 : 2.4 C2D T8300 , 1 Gb 8800M GTX SLI,2 Gb ram, 80 gb 7200 rpm hdd.
Sager 5791 :
Pros:
-lighter
-better battery life
-cooler
-wedge shape which loolks good with the trim
-good chance on upgrading GPU
Cons:
-noisier
-only 1 card
-only 1 HDD
XPS 1730:
Pros:
-looks awesome with all the LEDs on and it`s easy to use with the illuminated keyboard on
-SLI 8800M GTX
-2 hdds
Cons:
-heavier
-thicker(looks like a rectangle,no defined shape)
-runs much hotter than the sager
-less battery life.
So here it goes: The sager 5791 definitely get the best battery life, the looks and the portability prizes, but the XPS wins on power,LEDs and storage.
Build quality is pretty similar, but the XPS being thicker seems a bit more solid. No flex on either one of them, neither on the keyboard, nor on the screens. The XPS however is only a tad heavier than the Sager and I was surprised about it. However, the XPS gets really warm and using the keyboard can get really unconfortable, since the GPUs hit 75-77C when the back is raised, or 80-82C when it`s not.
The sager idles at 30-33C (CPU), 35-38C(GPU and 50C(HDD). Max temps : 55-60C(CPU),65C(GPU),58C(HDD).
The XPS has higher values though : 35-40C(CPU), 65-69C(GPUs),40-45C(HDDs). Max values 55-60C(CPU),75-82C(GPUs), 45-50C(HDD).
I realise that most people would ask how big the power brick is on both of them.
My camera`s batteries went dead yesterday as I was taking pics, so better pics will have to wait. I used my phone camera for now, but will replace them ASAP.
Any questions, feel free to ask.
So far, I would recommend both laptops to anyone who`s a gamer, they`re both awesome, but I personally would chose the Sager over the dell for the better battery life, the awesome look and no SLI hassle. The SLI is still a pain , and takes some getting used to.

I like the XPS. I would use it more for heavy gaming. Even without SLi, the single 8800GTX is a beast.
-
Indeed. But SLI has a cost, high temps.
-
on the old days. the sager owned, and it still.
-
That's like walking to your garage and saying "Hmm, the Ferrari, or the Lambo today?" -
Yup! that exactly reforms what i'm thinking about
-
Brainer, that too is a nice system you've got there! And I see she out-performs me... still!
Someday Alienware... someday I will rise up... -
Does Alien ware offet 8800 GTX in SLI? ALienware looks better than both of em combined
-
^it is a matter of taste,i like xps`s design more
-
the dell has a more solid Build (i'm an Alienware fanboy dont get me wrong, but i like the dell more than the m17x)
-
-
Well, he's not a 14 year old fanboy... He's realistic.
-
as Kgann said
i'm a 16 years old Fanboy
-
Yes, the Dell feels more solid. but it`s thicker all around. I dunno, kinda like it .
The Sager will however stay my favourite laptop, but I`m selling it. -
Wow, that dell is F-ugly!
-
the 5791 looked like a little brother next to it.
-
if i had the option then i'd keep the XPS and get external keyboard for gaming.
-
-
agreed with lights they look awesome!
-
i see now... that laptop reminds me of a good ol' friend of mine....
-
i'd take the XPS over the M571RU w/ its absolute hideous orange trimming and aluminum speaker cover any day. at least the XPS went all out.
-
The system actually looks normal without the lighting effects active...
-
The 5793 can have silver trim too if you don't like orange. The Dell looks kind of tacky imo.
-
I would just like to say... Lord Shar has ridiculous laptops according to his sig... not to mentioned uber expensive
-
Well he is a PC gaming addict, so nothing strange with that. I have myself the XPS M170, a Desktop Gaming rig and this XPS M1730
-
Jesus... how much disposable money do you people have?
-
Some put money on cars which is even more useless, some put money on computers.
-
and some on foooood! lol
-
Stop right there, ok? To each, his own. You don't believe in spending a lot of money on cars? That's fine. But don't make stupid statements like that. -
Exactly,to each their own. i worked for the money and bought what I wanted and needed.
The XPS is not f-ugly, it looks quite good imo.
Sure, the RU is better looking, but I`m a big guy and like big stuff. The Dell fits me better.
Would`ve gotten a 9262,but the price was nowhere near as good. -
-
Once again, a matter of opinion. -
Not stupid at all it´s true. Some put lots of money into a ferrari for example, same is with laptops. Cars on the other hand when you open up the door of your new car it has already lost $3000 easily. This with the more expensive cars of course.
Also cars is a much more expensive hobby, you know if they break they are very expensive to fix, has expensive parts. -
mine is outlet i have coming as well i REALLY hope the scratches are a rare thing.. since the unit i have coming i dont think i can get the complete care on.. though i will try to add it
-
-
This thing is fast, man , Crysis looks so great on it
-
I bet! Is this your new system, Eleron!
-
it is his new system
-
I would have got the XPS, but I think that if it had my Sager specs, it would be pricier. Eleron, any thoughts?
I am happy with my unit; just wish I had enough dough for the 8800. -
actually they can be had for pretty cheap.. i actually right now know of a 1730 with t9300 and dual 8800's for right around 2500$ never touched out of the box.. blue color.. so yeah if you look they can be found pretty cheap and a LOT LESS than the sager 9262 with almost the same specs...
i just bought one (white) with a t9300, 4gb ram, 400gb (dual 200gb raid 0), dual 8800, intel n, bluetooth, webcam etc etc.. for 2500 shipped with 3 year warranty (no complete care but in home on site for 3 years) so yeah... -
Yup,with a bit of luck, you can get one NEW for around 2500$ ,best gaming laptop deal around.
It`s a monster, UT3 ROCKS on max settings and WUXGA -
^^^ thats a tough find but from the outlet not unheard of
-
Tweaked it a bit more, max temps 53/58 for CPU, 69C for GPU, running crysis at WUXGA ,averaging 27fps, no OCing
WOW,this laptop absolutely rocks in terms of power -
so are any of you guys going to tell us how you guys got the deals?
-
i think they have outlet discount coupons occasionally. combine that w/ right timing and you should get good deals. although the deals mentioned are absolutely stunning. i may purchase my next notebook from the outlet myself
-
-
Nice buy Eleron!
How are the speakers on it compared to the Clevo?
And how much build quality difference is there in regards to the screen/lid casing? -
The Speakers are awesome, they`re loud and there`s actually a hint of bass.
They`re suitable for watching movies and listening to music, but then again, I use the Creative Xi FI card, which appears to be MUCH better than the USB creative, which also is a world appart from the onboard speakers.
WOW.
The lid is thicker since it has LEDs also, and there`s no flex anywhere. It`s an awesome machinery.
I never thought I`d play Crysis on WUXGA so smoothly -
eleron check the XPS M1730 thread. I posted some more tweaks that gives you additional boost in Crysis
-
Actually, I play Crysis at 1440x900 all very high
looks awesome
