Microsoft has their own VGA to HD cable for the 360. I know how the video part will work but I am not sure how the audio part will work since my monitor does not have the RCA inputs. I want to hook up my xbox 360 to my monitor and listen to the music with headphones. If I get a male HDMI to female DVI adapter, would I be able to get sound from the monitor's speakers since HDMI sends video and audio thru one cable? Which cable would be better in terms of picture quality. I want to play in high definition, around 720p or higher.

How would I get sound to my headphone if I get the VGA to HD? Is my monitor comparable to a 720p LCD TV? I don't know if I should use this or purchase a better LCD. My monitor's stats are:

Type 19" Wide Color TFT Active Matrix LCD
    Display Area 16.1" horizontal x 10.0" vertical; 19" diagonal
    Optimum Resolution 1440x900
    Contrast Ratio 700:1 (typ)
    Response Time 5ms (max)

Also, are gaming monitors better or LCD TVs? What size is ideal? I plan to sit between 1.5 feet to 2 feet away.

You post is so confusing that I'll just start from scratch.

Your Xbox has HDMI out, Component out, and Composite out. You monitor has VGA in and DVI in. Unless your monitor has HDMI in, it also has 3.5mm jack audio in.

Choose a way to get video onto your monitor, either HDMI to DVI or HDMI to VGA. Preferably the former. Neither DVI nor VGA carry sound, they are video only.

Then use composite out to audio in. The sound will now play out of your monitor.

You will lose sound if you use a HDMI to DVI adaptor. The only way to keep sound is to either use speakers that have RCA imports, or to get a RCA to 3.5mm jack converter, which you will then be able to plug into your monitor/PC speakers.

Your monitor's output resolution is comparable to a HD LCD TV, although the panel quality is probably quite far from it. If you plan to just sit 2 feet away, a 19" monitor will be fine.
