Ok I made a thread on the warranty of an xbox but another issue came up that's not related.
I'm considering getting a gaming console of some sort.
I've leveled it down to 2 consols the PS3 or Xbox360.
I love playing halo 1 and 2 and I really want to play halo 3.
However my older brother want's a PS3 and he doesn't really like halo games.
We plan to split the cost of the console and since he works I'll use it then and when he's home I can use it unless he wants to.
But he wants a ps3 and I want an xbox. So we've been considering the factors such as xbox live ect.
I have some questions.
Do you have to pay for xbox live gold? Can you play halo 3 online without paying for live?
Do some games require you to pay to play online or somethin?
Also we're considering that one of us buy the console we want if we cant decide between the two.
Does the PS3 get as hot as the xbox.
Do these consoles make much noise?
I'm considering buying this xbox360

Just a hot tip, the Xbox360 displays much better colors than the PS3, hands down.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162742/index.html
That is an excellent website in comparing the graphics of numerous games such as NFS Carbon or COD3. -
Xbox Live has two membership options, Gold and Silver. Silver is free to everyone and you can do things like download demos, purchase downloadable content, chat with other members, etc.
But to actually play online, you need the Gold subscription. There are several options in how to get it, like a one-year pass is $50 and a 1 month pass is around $7-8.
The PS3's online service is free called the Playstation Network.
Personally, I was a Sony and Playstation fanboy. But no longer.
But after my PS3 had broke, I got an Xbox 360 instead (which I swore never to get, especially with the RROD problems) and has worked far longer than the PS3. The new models no longer have the RROD defect and isn't something to worry about.
I am now very concerned for the build quality of the PS3 instead, especially many model's whose Blu-Ray drive becomes defective as mine did. Its a more widespread problem than PS3 owners want to admit and Sony charges $150 to repair it if outside warranty, when many older models are breaking down now.
I don't want to scare you, people think the PS3 is much better build than the 360, but I think the situation has reversed now and I'm saying this as a former Sony fanboy.
A better place to compare multiplatform games on the PS3/360 is Eurogamer.net. They have 14 articles comparing the games so far on both systems.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=246129 -
You have to pay for an Xbox live gold account to be able play online. When first get an Xbox live account you will get 1 months free subscription.
Another thing to mention is the XBOX has a higher failure rate than the PS3. If you get the Red Ring of Death you will have to send it off to microsoft for service. Mine is there at the moment. One of my cousins has had to send his off to Microsoft 3 times.
If I had to buy a console now I would definatley go for the PS3. -
Most fun = Wii
Best performance/graphics & online system = 360
Cheap BluRay player and not much else= PS3
I own the first two. I have zero interest in the PS3 and even less now after hearing/reading about buggy games for that system in comparison to it's other competitive console counterparts. (How's that for alliteration?)
Fwiw, my 360 is just shy of 3 years old now, first generation. I have had no hardware failures or RRoD associated with it at all. -
I have a PS3, and i bought it over the Xbox for a few reasons. First, it has blu-ray, and the quality of it as a media player is very high-Cnet says it is as good as any blu-ray player on the market. Sony has also made it easy to upgrade the hard drive, and intall a linux distro- I use Ubuntu and it runs flawlessly, making the PS3 double as a basic computer, and it works great as an emulator for nes, snes and older console games.
These gave the PS3 an advantage in my opinion, but if you don't need these fatures then it wouldn't matter.
Also, I've never had my PS3 run hot, and I can barely tell when it is running it is so quiet.
Edit: I have had no problems with games being buggy, and its given me no reason to question its build quality. I think the issues were with the earlier 60 gb versions. I have an upgraded 40 gb. and use it for several hours everyday and hav enever had a problem. -

The PS3 is going to go crazy with games here real soon. Xbox costs you 60 dollars a year while playstation network is free. You have to have xbox live to play halo online. The PS3 blows out much hotter air, but the insides stay cool. Yes both systems make noise. I have them both and they both can be distrcting sometimes.
Currents games available : 360
Upcoming games: PS3 by a million
Heat: tie
Noise: tie
Controller: PS3, the controller has a sweet motion sensor that can be used in games
Graphics: PS3... no matter what you hear i promise you that the ps3 has better graphics. It's capable of much more detail. I notice that the 360 sometimes displays better brightness, which results in better color however the ps3 has much more realistic graphics. Games like Killzone 2 are just crazy.
My 360 has red ringed 3 times. IF you send it in to be repaired they send you a different system. While I wanted MINE back. but It's working now after 3 returns. Oh, the 360's online features a bit better but not worth the extra money. check out playstation home on youtube -
The advantages of the PS3 are that is has a BR-drive and it doesn't make so much noise.
Since 4 months I've the 360. Not because the better graphics, but:
- PS3-controller is too small and crap (just my opinion)
- XBox is much cheaper
- Flashable (like: playing burned games)
- More games avaiable for the console.
The disadvantage is that you've pay for XBox Live Gold. but that's EUR. 40,- per year (don't know how much that is in dollars, but EUR. 3.33 per month). Silver is free, but then you can't play online.
/Edit: I had to press F5 before I should post. -
I'd advise not going for the eBay option, it seems like a good idea but a lot of them are quick fixed and have therefore have been opened and tampered with.
Otherwise, a retail 360 I would recommend, in the UK they're nearly half the price of the PS3 and the controllers are nicer. Unless you have a lot of blu-ray movies and/or the majority of your fav games are PS3 exclusives it's wisest to go this route. -
360 has the games and great online service. However it is prone to breaking (mine has had RROD and now has a screwy dvd drive, it is 2 years old) the newer models are a bit more reliable.
PS3 is a far better machine though the 360 displays color better as the others have said. PS3 however supports bluray, has an amazing processor and is very reliable and sexy. Its much quieter and cooler running. I have mine running linux now as well. online service is free -
OK I'm pretty sure this is a tie because I realize that I'll never settle without halo 3
I'm planning on getting the 360 and my brother will be getting the ps3.
That way we both get what we want and can also see the other one
About Xbox live, I don't have a CC card so do you think I could buy those Live Gold 30 day trials off ebay cause I can use paypal to buy them. I could buy like 12 of them super cheap and use them ya know?
Would that work? -
The 360 definitely trumps out PS3 in the graphics department, unlike what most people have said on this forum. THeres no debate, read 2008/2007 game comparison reviews, every site will say that quality is better on the 360.
People will argue that those reviews refer to older games and developers who haven't gotten use to PS3 programming to utilize its power. I'll debunk that, recently PS3 Fallout 3 received a 8.5 vs a 9.0 on the 360 because of washed out graphics and bugs. We're talking about Bethesda, who developed the previous Oblivion on the PS3, all the accumulated knowledge went to hell, and you get a less than optimal end product that is Fallout 3. So its pretty safe to assume that multi-plat titles will follow this trend in the future.
Honestly, the only arguement for PS3 is added features: free built in Wii-Fi, blu-ray player. And that cost a hundred more.
With XBL, its 50 for 13 months. The price comes with better service. You'll probably want to think about that one the most. Its basically ~ 1 GAME. -
I know here in the UK you are able to go into a gaming shop like Game or Gamestation, and you can buy an xbox membership for cash over the counter, you can buy 3 month and 1 year. I'm sure you should be able to do that in the US.
The only thing about the trials you can buy is they are only valid for a certain time, so you might end up buying a load of rubbish. -
Xbox 360 is way better.
1. Xbox 360 has way to many better exclusives like (halo 3 , gears of war, fable2, rockband 2)
2. Xbox 360 has better games than PS3
3. xbox 360 runs games better than the PS3 just look how fallout 3 runs on the xbox 360 compared to the PS3.
4. The live services is 1000 times better sure you have to pay for xbox live but paying $50 for 13 months for a great service thats always updated (huge fall update) is not bad at all. PS3 service sucks. -
I would choose 360 for sure or Sega Dreamcast. GOOOOO SONIC!

This is a silly thread. Neither are across the board "better", it's purely opinion based. Basically the best recommendation anyone objective will give you is look at their respective game libraries, and decide which has more titles currently and upcoming that you want. Also take into consideration what your friends mostly have, cuz that also opens a door for you in multiplayer games, and borrowing games from friends
-
I only have an XBox, which I love - it's the first console I've ever had and it does everything I want and more. It has gone wrong once but was collected, repaired, and returned from Germany within 7 days of the first call. My brother has both, and he's used the XBox substantially more, only playing the PS3 for MGS4 and recently Drakes Fortune.
Anyways, anyone looking to purchase a console any time soon should wait till mid November when the XBox dashboard overhaul - NXE - is released, along with the entire Netflix HD catalogue being added to thier own (there are many other changes but I can't recall them off the top of my head - take a look at xbox.com)
It appears that (in the UK at least) MS are positioning the XBox as a home entertainment device, given the very competetive pricing and the huge ad campaign they're running. Directly against the PS3 in fact. The only place the XBox does lose out (IMO) is the Blu-Ray player - but consider how often you watch your movies, and even for an avid moviefan like me it's better to stream a HD film instead and pay £2 to watch it. If thats not your cup of tea it's getting to the point where you can pick up a dedicated Blu Ray/DVD player for £100ish anyway. -
here are some more exclusives for you
crackdown
fear files
perfect dark zero
ninja gaiden 2
halo wars
halo recon
forza motorsport 2
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Lost Odyssey
viva pinita
sure the 360 breaks for often than he PS3 but least MS did something and extended the warranty and coming out new models with newer mother boards next is the jasper. Sure PS3 online is free but do you get anything near what xbox live gives you? -
ok i bought a ps3 on launch and earlier this year finally bought a 360 cheap off ebay from a company, first off dont buy them off ebay, i went through 3 before i got one that worked. The first one RROD on me and the next 2 were banned from xbox live permanently probably from the previous owner tampering with it. O and if you wanna put up flashing the system as a bonus remember youll never play online again if you do that cause MS will ban the system for ever. A lot of 360 games have looked better than the ps3 version because the games were developed for the 360 and crappily ported to the ps3, its been shown when a game is developed for the ps3 whether it be exclusive or not, the ps3 version does show its power and is at least on par if not better than the 360 one, look at COD4 for instance or UT3. One thing i hate about the 360 is how hot and loud it gets. My ps3 is always cool and very quiet even during long periods of play, the 360 gets loud as hell as soon as you start playing a disc, its ridiculous. They are both good systems tho so i mean either choice will be good, o and rock band 2 is definitely not a 360 exclusive they just got an earlier release than the ps3, check your **** next time.
-
calm down fanboys, both systems r good, its just about what games u like.
-
+ PS3 dont break down?..you really think the PS3 is free of technical problems? Yes it has fewer major hardware malfunctions, RROD broke the old 360 console. The new 360 console entirely overdrafted the problematic apparatus that was causing the problem. The new versions (especially post June 2008) are free of this problem and they will come with 3 year warrenties. This comparison is irrelevent now.
+ You said that PS3 exclusives have great graphics, but its not to say that 360 exclusives arent equally amazing. Uncharted was a great looking game on its own merits, Gears of War was also a great looking game. Its impossible to even arguement that Uncharted looks better because technically both were on par, its the artistic style that separate the two (do you like more color, or more of a post apocalyptic feel?) This comparison says nothing as well.
+ The Real Difference, after you see through the bull differences, is the game library. Its 360 exclusives: Halo, Gears, Fable, Ninja Garden, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, Tales of Vesperia, Banjo, Viva Pinata, Forza vs PS3: MGS4, Uncharted, LBP, God of War, GT, Resistance, Warhawk, Valkyria Chronicles.
*Im not including fake ones like Socom (how does that attract people toward PS3 when theres COD4 multiplat sitting there), Motostrom? Are we mentioning any sub par AA- titles? I even added Valkyria Chronicles for you, you missed the best RPG for PS3.
*And its stupid to compare future titles because we dont know how they'll turn out. And its a boring competition, for your White knight chronicles, 360 players are just going to say Star Ocean 4, whats the point.
I will say that the likelihood of a PS3 exclusives going multiplat is much much greater than a 360 exclusive going multi: Look at FFXIII, Tekken?!! MGS4 is going to be on the 360, bet on it.
As of right now, PS3 is trying to catch up to the 360. Resistance 2, Killzone 2 are attempts on Sony's part to even out the heavily 360 favored shooting genre. Valkyrian Chronicles gave the PS3 RPG library a breather from the 360 onslaught (Tales of Vesperia, Mass Effect, those two titles use to own the entire PS3 rpg library)
The good news is that you can expect Sony to push out alot of titles. But realize that this is because the 360 has a lead in quality titles. -
all ill say is youd be surprised how many people socom attracts, look at the huge number of people still playing the original ones for ps2 lol and i highly doubt MGS4 will go over to 360 mainly cause ud need to put it on like 3 or 4 discs just to be able to store the game without a BD ROM
-
just buy a ps3 and a xbox 360 and be happy fan boys
-
Even if they had to release it on 2 or 3 discs, switching them won't be as slow as waiting for the PS3 to install gigs of data before every chapter. -
1. He bought a cheap 360 off Ebay, basically it could have been refurbished, it could have been the early production models with the faulty components, it could have been an "unused" display model, who knows. The point is, new post june 2008 360s have entirely different components that entirely eliminates RROD and other similar hardware failures.
2. So hes saying that games that look worse on the PS3 is because of bad developers. And games that look good on the PS3 is because of good developers. Bottom line is: Do you really want to worry about the developer when second guessing the quality of your games? Its not consistent. Regardless of these, the fact is that a larger portion of PS3 titles look worse than their 360 counterparts. Which tells you that a larger portion of developers still cant program well on the PS3. The fact is the 360 is easier to program on, the PS3 is harder to program on. Given multiplat titles with limited development cycles, the chances are, the PS3 version going to look worse. This arguement only applies to multiplat titles, which unfortunately for the PS3 make up 80% of the games out there.
3. Its true that the PS3 runs quieter provided that you install the game on a HD. 360 owners will have this option with the new XBL update (free), and the playing field is evened there.
anyways, this is just to point out that the real difference and reason to choose between the two is the game library.
Its the reason that I got a 360. Titles like Halo 3, Gears, Tales of Vesperia, were deal sealers. -
Personally, I still it all comes down to your needs.
I've played extensively on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (i own the 360). The PS3 is rather nice as a blue ray player, I will give it that. Unfortunately I prefer shooter games and the Xbox 360 is a much better platform for that. The controller design is set up much nicer and the games themselves are designed better.
Also about the argument about online play, I remember trying to get a COD4 game on the PS3 and it was empty as in no one online. Whereas when we booted up the XBOX 360, there were thousands of players of player online in just the west coast.
Also my Xbox 360 (elite has never had any problems). While my friend's PS3 crapped out on him. And this guy loves his Ps3. He wipes it free of dust everytime he turns it off. And he never leaves it on all night. He basically treats it like his baby. Meanwhile I leave my 360 on weeks at a time since I stream movies through my computer to it.
Overall though, its really your choice. If your into shooters, get the 360 -

This thread should be closed, as there are thousands of them on the net, and people just get upset.
And i have had both a PS3 and a XBOX 360
Regards
John. -
I have both and game on my 360 and use my ps3 for blu-ray movies.
The Xbox 360 has a better online setup BUT ALSO COST 7 BUX A MONTH and i like the controller better for FPS..However i am on my 4th as they die alot LOL
I think the PS3 is a better buy since you get blu-ray and free online and you can put Linux on it. -
After you get the system, you'll see that it doesn't really matter because you'll self justify your purchase in which ever skewed rationale possible. Before all this however, before buying, being objective at least leads you to a more satisfactory decision. -
@ the OP
If you have a netflix subscription and enjoy watching movies, Blu-ray is really awesome. Otherwise it boils down to games (and as more games are going multi platform, this is becoming a non issue).
Personally, I would take a title like LittleBigPlanet over all the the FPS games in the XBOX library, but that's just me. What matters is the games YOU (and your brother) like. -
I'm sellin my PS3 if anyone is interested
its the 60Gb model with PS1/PS2 build-in
-
No LittleBigPlanet love?
-
Just buy whatever you want.
The console debate has been going forever.
Console Debate: It's same thing as, "Should I buy blue car or red car?" -
The PS3 is a better machine overall, it's just more bang for your buck. But I still play my 360 10 times more than my PS3 because most games are made on the 360 first and then ported to the PS3 so they have better quality.
-
Hm..another console vs console thread?
Let me sum it up .. again. (I have both systems and I've been a poster in active vs-threads in various forums for too long, so I know what I'm talking about)
Playstation 3 good sides : Better exclusive games* , free Online play, Blu-Ray drive, intergrated WiFi, larger HDD, future proof & "healthy".
Playstation 3 bad sides : Expensive, some games require installing, bunch of bad-ports and of course diffrent delays.
Playstation 3 neutral sides : Quore subscription, PS Home, Trophy's, switchable HDD, Playstation Store.
So overall, the higher price tag is justified by Blu-Ray drive (which is by the way, still the fastest Blu-Ray drive on the market) and intergrated WiFi module.
But it isn't justified by a handful of bad ports, like Fallout 3, Orange Box or GTA IV. These things are justified by the complicated architecture of Playstation 3 and because these games are PORT's - meaning they were developed for PC or Xbox360 and then ported to Playstation 3, so whining about it won't take you anywhere.
Now..about Xbox360.
The good sides : It's very cheap, it can be modded/flashed, it has a larger amount of online-players, it's controller is highly praised and alot of good multiplatformers.
The bad sides : The infamous RRoD of course, Gold-subscription is with a fee, expensive WiFi adapter and HDD, dead HD-DVD player support.
The neutral : Achievement system, NXE and Marketplace.
Overall, the reason why I'd say Playstation 3 is more superior is because of it's CELL. Most of you don't know why it's so special except it's a processor with 8 cores, well..it allows developers to create more intelligent AI's, more detailed worlds and more realistic actions.
Some of you whine (alot) about that some Playstation 3 multiplatform games look inferior to Xbox360 games, and that is about the only thing X360 fanboys can show off - with some better ports. But not all multiplatformers have X360 / PC as leadplatform, such as Mirrors Edge, not many of you know that it's lead-platform is Playstation 3 and it'll recive exclusive DLC. Just as Bioshock, Eternal Sonata and such will get.
But still, since it's much easier to develop on X360, I'm sure we'll see some bad ports on PS3 in future. But at least, Final Fantasy XIII lead-platform will be Playstation 3 and SE confirmed that X360 will look little worse because of the multidisk and because it'll be a port .. though we have 2 years until that game comes. =x
Some of you say X360 has better games, well .. though it IS all about the taste in games, I can say it's slightly wrong. X360 has better XBLA games yes, but real games .. no.
A small comparison :
Shooters/FPS : X360 has Halo 3 and Gears of War series. PS3 has Killzone and Resistance series.
Driving/Simulator : X360 has Forza series and upcoming RacePro. PS3 has Gran Turismo and Wipeout series.
RPG : X360 has Blue Dragon and Fable series. PS3 has Final Fantasy (even though one of them is multiplatform) and Shin Megami Tensey series.
Action : X360 has Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human (heh) and Ninja Blade. PS3 has Uncharted : Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword and Ratcher and Clank.
Now .. we've been through most of the types, but I havent named the biggest titles on PS3 yet. ;]
Metal Gear Solid 4 / LittleBigPlanet / Heavy Rain / God of War III / L.A Noire.
Each of those is unique and so far these things are only on PS3, but X360 does have one title on it's way : Alan Wake, hopefully it'll turn out to be a good game too. -
-
ummm MGS4 and uncharted and little big planet are the only big ones
the xbox has more a better ones
gears of war, gears of war 2 which has already gone gold with millions of pre orders halo 3, rock band 2!!!!
I'm sure MGS4 will end up on the xbox 360
again it depends on what games you like but to me 360 has a lot more and better exclusives -
Also MSG4 makes up for like 50 other xbox games.
-
lol halo 3 and gears of war make up for 100 PS3 games lol
I dont hate sony I have a psp and love it I just dont like the ps3. -
I've made my decision to get xbox360 because of what a'lot of you said that it depends on the games and since I want halo 3, halo recon, and halo wars I'm going for the xbox360.
So I plan on getting that one off ebay that I mention because it's much more expensive retail and the seller is a power seller on ebay.
Thanks for ALL your replies everyone -
Metal Gear Solid 4 is exclusive, Rock Band 2 is also on Playstation 3.
Halo 3 is nothing special when compared to Resistance 2 or Killzone 2.
I understand you like Xbox360 more, it's fine. But ignorantly bashing just doesn't quite deliver your message.
Uncharted itself isn't that special when comparing it to some other games PS3 has.
Sure, X360 has some really good games too, but Gears of War 2 is a corridor shooter running on UT 3 engine .. basically this game could've been launched at 2005 already. (Not sayng it's bad, oh no, I like GoW series) -
-
-
(waiting for next gen console to come out so I can pick up a cheap PS3 just for SMT, Disgaea and anything else made by ATLUS a.k.a. PUREWIN)
Just get the console with the exclusives you want and play everything else on a PC haha. -
to tell you the truth there is no better console. It depends on what games people like. I'm a shooter and action gamer thats why I love halo and gears of war so much. If the PS3 had halo and gears maybe I would have a totality different opinion on the ps3 I guess it comes down to the software. The software is what makes a console great.
-
Its MGS4, LBP, R2, Valkryria Chronicles vs Halo 3, Gears 2, Fable 2, Mass Effect
tough call, I would love MGS4 on the 360, and if it does become multiplat, theres not reason for me to get a ps3. -
Better games on the 360, sometimes better visuals too. But I got the PS3 purely for its power, blu-ray, motion, and its better media center capabilities.
-
Also, more of the hits on the 360 get ported to the PC anyways (e.g. Mass Effect, Gears of War, Fable 2?, etc), so (specifically for me) getting a PS3 would allow me to get a wider range of 'exclusive' titles. And of course there's ATLUS
-
Ok, no matter what kind of bot are u there is one truth that everyone is missing here. MGS4 WILL NEVER COME to 360!! I dont know if anyone of u even played the game but its not just a matter of rewriting the code!! plus it will have to be sold on like 18 dvds
