Whats your favorite RTS game?? Mine would be the whole C&C series(except Red Alert 3 and C&C 4). SC2 was good but C&C rocks.

I think it's still Total Annihilation. Runner ups include Red Alert 2 and Vanilla Company of Heroes. Not sure if Shogun counts as an RTS, but I've been playing a lot of mp coop with my friend. Supreme Commander was a good game and supposedly the spiritual successor to TA, but for some reason I just couldn't get into it.

Rome total war, sins of a solar empire and lastly shogun 2.

I liked a lot total annihilation, however it was too easy

If you guys didnt played europa universalis or world conflict give those a try

SC2 and Warcraft 3 are at the top of my list. I haven't played a whole lot of RTS's though. Used to Play Age of Empires 2 forever ago.

Total Annihilation is no doubt one of a kind, the top of my list. The vanilla AI was too easy, but try putting the Banzai AI on max difficulty...it'll start churning out units like a 5 second quick toast and jam. I played one game with the Banzai AI for days, and still couldn't stop playing it until TA just crashes due to the massive amounts of units on game. The fact that it is very much modable adds to very high replayability.

Another game that was great would be Homeworld. The inclusion of 3D movement planar (first of its genre then), 3D units with breathtaking graphics and a very very amazing storyline. Another modable game.

I don't know about you all, but I still liked Startopia :D ! If anyone knows about it that is...but then again I don't think it counts as an RTS.

yep cheap and easy AI is usually a problem, in rome at least I could and can play online games easily, the world in conflict AI is limited too, but the players make up for it.

The most difficult AI that I saw was from SoaSE. and you are right homeworld was a breakthrough.

And hell yeah! modded games are always great!

have you played rome with europa barborum or SoaSE with Sins of a Galactic Empire? loads of fun!

I really love Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. The first one more than the second, I like base building.

I also like AI War. That has some long and fun matches in space.

I like Age of Empires 3. Something about hitting villagers with cannon balls and watching them twirl through the air is fun.

I didn't play much TA with the AI, mostly MP. Only time I skirmished was to test out new build orders. Still wasn't good in MP  but it was fun, challenging, and fast paced.

I haven't played Rome with any other mods sadly... but I have tried Sins with Galactic Empire :). Forgot to mention, Star Wars: Empire at War was great as well after the release of Forces of Corruption (of course, with mods :D).

And TA online...I didn't a great internet connection then, or barely even had one. So I indulged myself with 10 AI skirmish :D

Command and Conquer:Generals and Zero Hour. Still a pretty decent online fanbase to play against even though the games are nearing 8-9 years old. Love them!

Warzone! Awesome! Quite old now though!

Red Alert is a classic, still remember playing that years ago.

Best RTS? TA, loved it to bits. Had some epic all nighter MP games with mates. And I mean EPIC.

Supreme Commander was awesome as well, only problem is the system requirements were quite high. The large games with multiple AI's could really bring even the most powerful systems to their knee's. But god I love how massively strategic it is. Zoom in to individual units fighting away, zoom out to a global map with all your units displayed. So innovative. I haven't played the sequel yet, but heard they have massively dumbed it down, which is a huge shame. My brother said don't even bother, catering to the masses now.

Company of Heroes was outstanding. Graphics still look stunning in my opinion. Frantic, awesome fun squad based fighting over great environments. A firm favourite of mine.

Homeworld, brilliant. Awesome story line (who can forget that opening...), awesome new "3 dimensional" RTS concept, great graphics. Brilliant. Had some really good MP games on that one as well. The second one improved the graphics and continued the story, although I wasn't a huge fan of the direction it took.

SoaSE, another great RTS. MP games could take forever, especially when you were trying to corner the AI's fleets into a decisive engagement?!

I was underwhelmed by the original SC, though it might be because i played it this year for the first time and i really had my hopes and expectations high after SC2.
Also forgot to mention these - Age of Empires 2 and 3. Warhammer40K Dawn of War 2 was definitely an interesting and different take on the RTS genre.
And my least favorite RTS would be C&C 4. It was not that bad of a game but I was seriously disappointed. Online MP was ok but extremely disappointed with the SP, which used to be my favorite part of C&C. C&C 3 was such a worthy successor to Tiberian Sun and I expected C&C 4 to better C&C 3 in a similar way, but they completely screwed up.

C&C generals was ridiculous fun for me and some buddies over LAN, it's a real shame most of our games went long enough to run into the de-syncing problem, usually right around the time we were about to fire superweapons too :(

Sins of a solar empire may be my favorite just because it's so stable and the AI is quite good, but I don't really know of anyone locally who plays it, so it just doesn't bring back that same feeling C&C had. If I had some lan buddies playing it, sins would be #1 by a longshot.

SC2 is by far one of the few games that didnt feel like build turrets — chill and gather 10000000 minerals — build 100 super tanks and faceroll everything.

I love Dune series (still waiting for a remake of the first one). Dune 2 was my first RTS (and as I recall, is the father of all), so, logically, I bought Dune 2000 just arrived. And Dune Emperor is AWESOME!. BUT, I believe my favourite RTS series would be C&C.

Don't forget that the original StarCraft was released in 1998. That's over 13 years ago. Considering at the time we were running it on 450MHz Pentium II chips at the VERY top end and 32-64 MB of RAM, and the Voodoo2 had just been released, it's an amazing game ;) The story is still compelling, and the control isn't that bad. It really is one of those games that wears very well, IMO. No, it's not as good as some current games in many regards, but the fact that it's still better than many current games is a testament to how good it really was.

I remember annoying my roommates with a zergling rush... kekekekekekeke ;)

    C&C Generals + Zero Hour

I never cared much for original SC. I didn't think it was that great to be honest and don't think SC2 is anything all that special either, but that's just me. I've played and somewhat enjoyed both, but they are too much work and little fun. So many people take the game way too seriously, so it's hard to have fun unless you find friends to play with that like to just screw around.

It was a well balanced game, but I only played it because of my friend who was borderline obsessed with it. I didn't really care for the story, art style, or gameplay. I was pretty much spoiled by what TA brought to the table which I was still playing at the time.

Also, forgot about General + Zero Hour! That was some good fun and still had Westwood's style and humor. Shame a lot of people didn't like it because it wasn't in the Tiberium or RA universe.

Anyone play Dark Reign? It was another good RTS overshadowed in its time by TA, SC, and AoE.

    OMG you have mentioned it!

Dark Reign! I still have the original CD right next to me and play it on my netbook from time to time (doesn't really work on my main laptop's 64bit)! I loved it! Every unit has different voiceovers, the animation sprites were very lovable! :D But some of the units are very overpowered i.e. that shockwave tank which creates a giant tsunami to your base lol.

I bought Starcraft around the same time I bought my first computer: SONY Vaio desktop, 200 MHZ Intel Pentium with the much hyped MMX feature! 4 MB ATI RAGE integrated graphics and 32 MB of extreme RAM.

For the time, I thought SC was amazing. I think in terms of actually gameplay, it is still great. Even better than SC2 [imo].

I know the reason I did not like it was cause it was so old. The thing with a classic game is that it will remain a classic for you if you play it when it was new but if you play it when it is 13 years old chances are you won't like it, especially when you have already played its sequel.

Also, I forgot to mentioned Dune 2000. Me and my buddy would play co op with each other via 56k modem. Good times, but also trouble times for my parents in how they could not make house calls :).

If there is a next release... He dropped work on his next title, Kings and Castles to work on AoE Online and now he's raving about F2P as the future for the RTS genre. If we were to take his word and seeing how F2P games are, I would expect more of SupCom 2 style gameplay than a return to SupCom + FA.

The multiplayer aspect was/is great, however the campaign BOMBED!

I know, I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed the game. I was part of one of the best competitive 5v5 teams and our win ratio was quite high ... that's what made it fun (high rank competitive play) ;)

It's a shame that after just a few weeks, only 2000 players hang out to play online at any given time throughout the day.

Campaign ending was an abomination. It looked like they invested 5$ to make it.

The good news is that a new C&C is in production (got leaked in Feb 2011), we just don't know the details yet. Many are guessing that it's Generals 2, since that's the logical choice due to RA3/C&C4 already having their turn. I'm so psyched! :)

Hopefully they keep the Offense, Defence and Support sub-classes and just add tiberium fields like the majority wanted (I personally enjoy both resource types).

Agreed that the multiplayer was actually kind of fun, but still your favorite RTS. The multiplayer was fun cause it had superb pace, no resource gathering, deploy and attack. Was fun but i grew tired of it. Though my favorite thing about C&C4 was the return of the MK2 walkers. Reminded me of the good old Tiberian Sun days. I just wish they had atleast gotten the story part right, then i might have forgiven the awkward gameplay
Yes even I heard about the new C&C, a new studio is supposedly making it, not EALA. Though i heard it was a reboot of sorts. And yes i definitely want fields back. No oil fields was the reason i did not like RA3(along with the fact that the game was literally a joke, i know RA has been light compared to C&C but they just went too far with the comical theme, cannon paratrooper, seriously!). A Generals sequel would also be nice, but i just hope they dont try to 'rewrite' the whole genre like they tried with C&C 4.

For me to this day the best RTS is still TA.
I also liked the original SC, the problem is that by then I was spoiled by TA trough and trough. While the SC campaign is massively better, TA was far more fun to play.

Essentially the problem with SC1 was that it had outdated mechanics on the day it was released.
