    Anyone play Privateer? (original)
(in wing commander series, but you play a private citizen just trying to make a living)

I played that one through like 10 times.

Probably my love of the old game Elite (doesn't qualify I think as its an 80's game) that did it to me.

Diablo 1 without any possible doubt. Best game ever made :) Too bad there's no IPX protocol in vista :(

C&C would probably be my runner up.

Age of Empires - great strategy game
Ultima Online - first MMORPG I played that wasn't just text
Deus Ex (I think that was released in the late 90's) - great story
Starflight (actually late 1980s, but don't think I played it until 1990 or so)

    Descent II.

My dad used to literally fly circles around me and kill me with flares. I showed him though after I bought myself a sidewinder joystick and practiced for months. A Kali subscription was the first thing I ever bought online just for that purpose and it was amazing.

I'd never say there is a 'best' game, but a less obvious one from the early 90's was Kid Chameleon for the genesis. I still play through it every once in a while through emu. It was very original and had great sound for being a genesis game. I'm kind of surprised I've seen Mario 64 mentioned, but no Ocarina of Time in this thread.

Marathon series, Escape Velocity, Mechwarrior 2, System Shock 2, Deus Ex... man, can you limit the decade more? Almost all of the best games came out in the 90's.

Yes it will, along with many other classic adventure games. You just need this free virtual machine to run them: http://www.scummvm.org/

Actually, you don't need Scummvm to run Curse of Monkey Island on XP.

Well, you don't need it, but it's good to have it, since there's few problems you will get if you play without it.
