Damn thats a tough choice. I loved both those games. Will have to go with Zelda though, even though FF7 was incredible.

I see there was Zelda: A link to the past as well, another great game. I would have voted for this one, still have warm memories remembering playing this one on my SNES... :)

Hmm so many zelda games I get them a bit mixed up but I think the one that sticks witth me the most was Zelda 64, that was the ocarina of time if I am not mistaken.

Okami was a really good zelda like game, really nice for Wii.

Yeah, the first Zelda on the 64 was OoT. I saw this battle coming from a mile lol, but I didn't know which would win. Another title that deserves huge respect from the same era is Metal Gear Solid on PS1. The cinematic elements were groundbreaking then, and still are Hollywood quality. The gameplay was a perfect blend of modern and oldschool. And visuals were astonishing (for 1998). Easily the 3 most memorable games I've played.

(though riding your horse was pretty fun)

Metal Gear Solid on PS1 was awesome.

Yeah, this was probably the toughest choice to make since both games are freaking amazing in my opinion. Heh, I was the same as anothergeek, rooting for Final Fantasy VII in the end since I am a big fan of Final Fantasy.

Not surprised really. Zelda was THE game to own back in 1998, and it was awesome in every way. For some reason I never really liked FF7. Guess the materia system and the blocky characters when walking around just didn't fit my style. FF6 is a totally different matter, however.

FF6 was part of the SNES epic Squaresoft RPG era, add in Secret of Mana, and though not from square the Zelda a link to the past was a super awesome game too.

Those games are so good they hold value and are worth playing even know years after new tech and things have come about.

FF7 vs Zelda 64 to me its like apples to oranges.

FF7 was your traditional "JRPG" with lots of plot and characters, level grinding and all that jazz. It did it well but Zelda had the puzzle solving and live combat.

I'd say Starcraft is the best game of all time.

WC3 > Starcraft only because of the community and mass amount of custom games types & maps.

but lets hope SC2 can turn the tables.

Yay OoT! I loved that game for a long time, though now that I'm older, I do think Majora's Mask is better, for it still remains 'fresh' with each playthrough. OoT does feel a bit dated in comparison.

That said, OoT deserves its place; that and Civilization sparked my love for gaming.

MGS1 on the PS1, damn that was an awesome game. I still remember first playing it, the way it combined the different styles of gameplay with the cinematics, really was groundbreaking stuff.

Just thinking about Zelda: A link to the Past makes me want to go home and crack out the old SNES! I miss the good old days of gaming :D

i think Majora's Mask might be the greatest adventure game of all time. it had everything. i loved the darker story when pressed against OoT, not to say that Oot was poor - OoT is probably my second favorite game right underneath Majora's Mask.

i think the popularity with OoT shadowed over Majora's Mask, however, the game was equally as amazing. the graphics back then were stunning, the innovation with your character changing into the zoras and gorons and deku scrubs was phenomenal. the game absolutely blew my mind when i was a kid. the whole time continuum thing was pretty cool with you only having 3 days to complete the game, and all the little side quests were a blast. i was highly disappointed when the new LOZ came out only to taunt me with "collecting bugs" as a side adventure from the main story line. overall, the LOZ series is my absolute favorite, and i enjoy the console versions better than the hand held ones, however, Link's Awakening was quite fun!

while FF7 was utterly astonishing, the two games are a bit different. RPG versus Action Adventure. however, even though FF7 had a compelling story line, i think i would vote for the OoT over FF7.

Ocarina of Time was way better than Majora's Mask in my opinion, MM just seemed like they had tried to top Ocarina of Time and just could make it...
Zelda through and through, loved it in the 90's back on my N64 and I love it now aswell. (Bought it on Wii :D)

Xenogears was one of the most amazing JRPG I'd played. I would've preferred that disc 2 wasn't filled with cutscenes. I thought it was better than FF7 (although I did grind until I had 16 fully mastered counter materia).

There's another title for the PS1 which many did not care for. Valkyrie profile. I love that game. Especially since the main heroine is a silver haired goddess.

On a side note, Dungeon Keeper strikes me as one of the more innovative RTS games. Too bad there's nothing on DK 3 (EA, please do something about it)

Gamefaqs has done age polls in the past. I don't remember the results, but I'm pretty sure the majority are 18+

That's not to say 20% aren't under 18, but really, way to generalize...

The only game I had correct in my final 8 bracket was Final Fantasy 7 (which I had going all the way). I had starcraft taking out OoT :(

    I don't even like FF7 haha.

Yep, the story, sheer size of the world, the vast varietyof locations the story carries through, the gameplay, the addiction, the epic final battles, the astonishing CGI, the artwork. Did I mention the story? I put hundreds of hours into the game, well beyond where the 99 hour counter stops lol.

When I first got FF7, I didn't have a memory card for PS1 lol. I played a whole weekend without powering it off, got out of Midgar and the Giant Snake in the lake killed me, talk about devastating.

If Nintendo wanted to focus a little more on advancing hardware over gimmicky controllers we could be playing a better edition of Zelda today. They've abandoned the hardcore gamers, but hey, they're raking in the money so I guess that's all that matters. I could never stand the FF7 series or any other game with turn-based combat. IMO it's a shame nintendo abandoned the graphic style of The Windwaker, as it was much more beautiful than what the Twilight Princess is using. Oh well... Trying to say any game is "the best ever" is inherently a stupid idea anyway.

Ahh, the Midgar Zolum. Ya know, my brother got upto that with the first few days after getting the game on Christmas '97. We thought you had to kill it to get through the game. He ended up level-building for a week, until I started messing about and found that cave at the end of the swamp?
He did defeat it somehow, before getting to Junon.

Top memories, the graphics may not be great now, but for the time they were awe-inspiring and the blocky anime design seemed a perfect fit (somehow)

It's aged a bit, but I'm still to find a game with better characterisation and plot. Even with books and films I find myself asking if I prefer their stories to FF7 and I find that pretty embarassing - they fair much better than games do in these terms though. :D

In fact I ask you all - agreeing that MGS and Starcraft come quite close, does anyone know a game with (in their humble opinion) a better narrative? I'd be interest to play it if I haven't already.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I agree with what's been said be other members about GameFAQs. A good source for info, but hardly a credible or noteworthy organisation when it comes to critical analysis or awards. Yet again - mainly I blame the fanboyish teen membership.

On the otherhand Empire (yes a film site, didn't I mention I love films a books too already) also posted their top 100 recently too. You'll find it here. FFVII 2nd place again, but I'm happy enough with that as well...

    Aww you got it backwards.

CoD4 has like the best FPS one player, but multiplayer is a lot of the same and got boring fast.

Left 4 Dead and TF2 are more entertaining online I think.

Back in the day BF2 and BF2142 and counter strike is where it was at, but I played those out. Though BF2142 sounds like it would be fun if I was not so interested in the others.
