You check for artifacts, and obviously BSOD's and shutdowns.

if you have good temps and no artifacts , does that still mean the card will have a lower life?

High temps are the enemy of any electronics so if your running fairly cool, the life of your card should not be affected.

i can't get the overclocking to stick. i saved the profile and told it to load when windows starts but it doesnt. i also put the profile on the startup folder so it starts up when windows starts. when i restart windows it says that it loads the profile but when i check the core and memory it just goes back. how do i make it stay?

edit:i am pretty sure im using the right drivers. i have the new 169.01 drivers

What drivers are you using. Some drivers allow OCing, some don't.
