hi i have an inspiron 1720 with 8600m gt.recently i've downloaded 266.58 xp 32bit from nvidia site.everything was working fine but the display blacks out sometimes and doesnt come up until i shutdown for a few minutes.so i uninstalled it and tried some drivers from laptopvideo2go,all of them install fine but the nvidia control panel crashes saying "version mismatch" after right clicking an avi file or simply after a few minutes of bootup.now the pc works fine any no.of hours after the control panel crash,i can watch blurays, play fallout new vegas for hours, but once i restart the screen goes to 640x480 resolution with weird colours and i have to reinstall the drivers and the cycle repeats.

so what i have to do is reinstall drivers after every restart.so what i need is a solution to the nvidia control panel crash for laptopvideo2go driver or a way to disable the lid switch mechanism so that i can use nvidia drivers.please help.

did you clean out all remnants in safe mode using driver cleaner/sweeper or cc cleaner.
as youve changed from official to ltv2g it might be worth try that as something is conflicting with the control panel.

as youve got a very old gpu it might be safer just using older drivers like 186.81

When you say weird colours do you mean lines down the screen or blocks? also is the bootup text garbled when the laptop first comes on?

Sounds like you GFX card is dead tbh, the 8600m is a faulty card to begin with as they have a solder issue.

go into your power mode and you can change your settings to stop sleep mode or power down mode when you shut the lid.

i've managed to do that, but the screen turns off when i close the lid.my problem is,the laptop behaves as if the lid is closed and turns off even it is open and comes back after a few mins.ltv2g drivers disable that mechanism so i tried to install them but they dont install now :(.so im happy if my screen doesnt turn off by itself.dell laptops dont come with a visible switch,i've searched the web but can find any solution :(
