this morning i was feeling fine until i started playing Half life 2 episode one. I just got the game and never play Half life 2 before. so right from the begining of the game i was stuck.
this game makes you think too much! after playing it for a while my stomach started feeling weird. my head starts to hurts, nausea, and i felt like throwing up. first i thought it wasnt the game. so i stop for a while and felt better. then start palying it again. after awhile the nauasea came back and i almost threw up. i had a major headache.

googled and found alot of people saying they got nausea too. like this guy:

I was one of the unfortunate few who actually suffered bouts of intense nausea due to Half-Life 2's uniquely offset field-of-view setting. Keep the Dramamine handy—Episode One's still a bit of a vomit comet if you share my shortcoming. —Matt

viewing angles in HL series is very realistic, gorge yourself in hours of CS will get your mind used to it

It's the view point camera angle's fault or Frame of view. Just like Half-Life (original), HL2 is set around 70...while other FPS are at 90...so everything seems very "3D"...
Or maybe it's because the game's screen refresh rate is too low...

I Remember Medal of Honor-Allied Assault used to give me headache and nausea... felt like I had fever or something..

And you can modify the view...

Yeah, that is for real. Google it and see. People actually have reported serious motion sickness arising from the game.

    That's a quite interesting scenario.
I for one have never experienced nausea from playing HL2:Ep01.

But dieing because of a game? The only report of that which I've heard of was the South Korean incident where the S.Korean Guy played Starcraft for over 48 hours and died of heart failure.

    more:

"I can't play HL2, it makes me nautios!!
No other game makes me dizzy, its just screwed up. Then I wen't online and found out that 100,000+ people were also getting sick from playing it. Something about the refresh rate capped at 60hz and the visual cone shortened like a horse with those eye blockers. Long story short... WHY VALVE WHY? How is it possible 2 screw up a game so bad that it's unplayable? I played it anyway, taking breaks every hour and walking around. Was it worth it? NO! I finished the game and it was one of the worst FPS I've played in the past 10 years. GOOD GAME"

A lot of people feel motion sickness for any type of "realistic" FPS or even Oblivion, especially when you turn on bouncing, even in other games too.

Why'd you play it then? :p If I knew I was going to get sick from a game, I'd just stop playing. Game = entertainment. Getting sick != entertainment.

Actually, true clinical motion sickness is a very rare condition to develop from video game playing. It seems that Half-Life 2 is one of the first games in recent memory to have such a widespread problem with it, including people who aren't prone to motion sickness. I also agree that it would suck big time to buy a really fun game, and then find out it made you ill to play it. Not cool at all. :(

btw, i've played half life 2 for a couple of hours then had to restart the game and I've gotten more farther into it. I've also played the demo and beat it. I can pretty much tell you I haven't felt sick. I'll let you know if something comes up.

Nausea, cold sweats - it takes awhile for the feeling to go away.

I also suffer from playing HL2...no other game does it to me, and I'm a huge gamer, but I just can't beat that game. It gives me sweats, gets me hot and feeling like ****, it's so odd how roller coasters and theme park rides don't get me sick but a game does :/. But yeah, I can't play it for more then five minutes without getting sick. The farthest I got in the game was when you first get the jet ski thing and then I just started to get a real cold. It's ****ed up. And that happened the day before Christmas and I haven't touched the game since.

I don't know about the nausia issue but some parts of HL (all versions) do give a very good sense of vertigo! ie creeping round cliff edges etc and jumping over gaps in the combines tower.

Half-Life games tend to get more people feeling sick than others. When I picked up Half-Life 1, the problem for me was that Gordon ran faster than Olympic sprinters lol.

No they're not. Realistic viewing angle would be maybe 30 degrees, probably less, but that'd be unplayable. But you need to be *very* close to the monitor for higher viewing angles to be "realistic". Which is one reason why some people get motion sickness.

I believe HL2 uses 90 degree viewing angle, and CS uses 75... Or it's the other way around... In any case, neither is particularly realistic.

I found most of the new FPS's give me a bit of motion sickness. Halo 2 and HL2 made me sick. Stopped for a bit and went back now I'm fine.

On a side note I H2 and HL2 uses a new angle for field of vision and I don't like it. It feels less realistic than the old FPS's.

Yea this happens to me to, it sucks! Pretty much any FPS will do it from oblivion (no to bad, I can stand it) to games like call of duty, they are the worst after five minutes of playing I have to stop!

I also can't right simulated rides b/c I get a similar feeling, I wonder if there is any correlation?

People don't go on them to get sick, they go on them for the thrill/sensation of falling.

If you read pamplets that games give you, it has a BIG WARNING that says, "this game may cause dizzyness, nausea, etc. Please use with caution" So it is some type of sickness that people have developed for some reason, and its just something you have to watch out for.

Only game I ever got this feeling with was Descent (I'm dating myself). Descent had full range of motion being a space simulator and could easily get me running for the bathroom after only 15 minutes of play. I get motion sick fairly easily anyway and can't do things like read on the bus, or look out the side windows if I'm not driving, so maybe that was it.

Modern "on the ground" FPS don't affect me the way Descent did, and I've never felt that way playing HL2.

    Good luck!

I used to get a little sick to my stomach from playing first person shooters on my desktop years ago, but this would be after about 3 hours of non-stop gameplay.

In a way, it was probably a good thing I started to feel sick, got me away from the computer.

this was really serious. the only time i felt this sick was when i had the flu.

i can play other games non stop 24/7 and feel like Crap but never had a headache or nausea(almost threw up on the keyboard). I think its just me but i dont know. some other people get sick like me too. I like this game because it has good graphics and all but its really hard game. it makes you think alot! i thought it was a walk and shoot game but nope. its like a strategy game where you have to find ways to get out of situation.

The reason any one would get motion sickness from any type of game would when their brain thinks that what your eye see and what you hear do not match and hence it generally causes nausea, Dizziness, vertigo, and motion sickness.
Not every one suffers from it the same. Some suffer more than other due to the sensitivity of either their eyes or the labyrinth (Inner ear).

HL2 may cause grief for some while other may be fine with it. If you are the unlucky one.. chances are the only way to resolve it is either by not playing it. Or altering the game to provide similar feedback to your brain. Alter the angle of view, lower effect & background sound level are some things you can do to fix the problem. Also don't forget the blink your eyes are lot. Those who stare for longer period of time suffer the most.
