I've decided to buy a Clevo p150em. I had intended on getting a 7979m graphics card for it but was put off the idea by the utilization problems it was having. My only other option is the 675m (the 680 is totally out of my price range).

i hope to be playing games such as skyrim, bf3 & gtav (when its released).

so my question is which should i select? Although the 675m is older tec it will cost me £26 more then the 7979m. (that's $41 extra for what should be an inferior product)
is the 7970m still better then the 675m even with its utilization issues, and does a fix for this issue with the card look look likely in the near future.

i know similar issues have been brought up in this forum but the 7979m is more expensive then the 675m in those cases. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to computers so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow. Where are you finding this? DEFINITELY go with the 7970 it blows the 675m out of the water. The drivers on constantly getting better. I am looking for a laptop myself, do you mind sharing where you found the Clevo p150em that has a the 7970 choice for only 41 more?

yea it was off box.co.uk. i thought the pricing was a bit messed up, but it still works out cheaper when fully configured then mysn and pcspecialist which where the only other decent British websites i could find.

just to clarify the 7970 is 41$ cheaper then the 675m, not the other way around. however if your in the us you would be able to get way better prices then the uk anyway.

If the 7970m is within your budget, get it.

Trust me, you'll end up regretting it if you don't get it. The 7970m is absolutely worth it.

Testing seems to show that the resolution you play the game at effects how much the gpu is utilized (and how much it relies on the CPU if running in an under utilized state). At 1980x1020 (the default resolution for most of the p150em systems I've seen out there) the AMD 7970m shows its ability, but if you drop the resolution (and/or game settings) of the game below that then 7970m benefits over the 675m drop.

Here is links comparing the 7970m to the 680m at different resolutions:

Showing the higher the resolution and settings you play at the better the 7970 preforms.

Here are benchmarking of the 675m and 7970m, but when looking at these you should remember a few things. First a lot of these benchmarks were at 1024x768, and given what is shown above we now know that the 7970m will not preform as well at those low resolutions (either becase it relies on the CPU more, or doesn't utilize the 7970 well at that setting). The other thing is the date at which these benchmarks were run, what drivers were used, and in some cases what patch (version) of the game was running in the test.

    AMD Radeon HD 7970M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Here's one more link comparing the 680m to the 7970m. It shows other factors besides FPS in games, but again keep in mind that things may be different from when these tests were done depending on how drivers have changed.:

Also worth keeping in mind is that in the tests above (as far as I know) the 7970m systems were equiped with AMD processors, and that was often considered the bottleneck in the lower settings, but from the p150em systems I've seen it looks like you can have Intel CPUs (ex: i7-3630QM) selected with the AMD 7970's. Therefore its likely to out preform the systems in the tests above.

I'm considering a p150em system as well, but here in the US the 670m and 675m are cheaper. (It costs an extra $300 to change to the 7970 at the sites I've looked at :( ). Based on the stats shown on notebookcheck's gpu page (looking at the ultra readings) and the overclocker's forum posts I believe I'd go for the 7970 if its available for the same or less than the 675m.

If you end up getting system let me know how your experience with it goes.

With the 12.11 beta out, and the underutilization problems fixed (for DX11 at least, DX9&10 should be fixed with the final driver release), I don't see any reason to skip the 7970m if you can afford it. It offers similar performance to the 680m at a lower price point. It runs hotter and doesn't overclock quite as well as the 680, but the value is excellent. AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz,CLEVO P15xEMx score: P7016 3DMarks This is my 3DMark11 score with a mild overclock (6500 at factory clocks.) There are people on these forums approaching 8000, which is awesome for an affordable mobile gpu.
