so im basically in what i could see many ppl in. looking for a powerful notebook to play games on. With the upcomming of vista and dx10, i c new games and what not following it. So my point being, why spend 2500-3500 on a top laptop when in a year its gone. Now, vista will be ok, with merom and the amd 64 processors out soon and now, but what about the gpu? all the laptop cards now are DX9, and my main reason for wanting to go to vista was for DX10 games. I need a laptop now for college next fall, and want one to play ffxi mainly now. Would it be better in the long run to buy a pent m/core duo 32bit and an older gpu and then toss it and buy a DX10/64bit/dual laptop? Is there any talk or speculation that within the next year or year and a half nvidia or ati will have a dx10 'go' card? i remember reading somewhere that G80 was suspose to be dx10, but not 100% sure.

I'm guessing DX10 cards aren't too far around the corner, so if you could wait, that's always best, but buying a cheapie laptop now and tossing it for one with a DX10 compatable card wouldn't be a horrible idea, if you're willing to. Well, of course don't toss it, sell it or use it as a back-up/seperate computer. =P
I'm sure DX9 cards will run DX10 games as DX8 cards run DX9 games. It won't be stellar performance, but it'll still look very good.. Of course, my perception of very good is kind of skewed.
How're those 10,000 moat Carp coming along, by the way? -

If you want a DX10 GPU, there's no firm indications of when they're going to hit the market, but expect next year or late December.
DirectX 10 will be completely seperate of DX9; backwards compatability will be limited, and done through software. DX9 games will actually run signifigantly slower on DX10 hardware. DirectX 9 cards cannot play DirectX 10 games unless there is a version for DX9 as far as I know; not much information has been released on that aspect.

Get a laptop now dude, i we all waited or the next big thing we'd never buy anything. Vista won't be out until next easter, so you've got a year before DX10 will make its appearance. You may get cards before then sure, but why bother buying a DX10 card before DX10 comes out? By the time it does those cards will be superceded by newer ones.
Get something now that is affordable and suits all your needs.
Chaz, I know of someone who is Vista tester, he says that the performance impact of running DX9 games through a software API is minimal. Couple of % at most, by the time it is released I'd imagine multi core CPUs will be becoming the norm and people will have trouble running older games on DX10. -
ahh the infamous wait for XXX...then when XXX comes out...should I wait for YYY?..and so on..if you need the laptop now, then get one now. if you have no reason for it except school, then get it when school starts..
i am a victim to this, and usually end up buying both...i wish i had deeper pockets.
pb,out.
any talk of DX10 GPU?
