as the topic says. im using a dell 1520 laptop with 2.2 gbs and 8600m gt 2 gig ram and GTA4 IS RAPING MY COMP even on lowest settings. i heard that there were some mods that you could do to help? some .txt files?
i've downloaded the gta patch and im using the gfx driver that gives me the best performance overall (i've tried several), and im still gettin owned. i know that its a poor pc port but still i wanna play lol. im getting like 11-15fps...

Yeah throw a few thousand $US or £GBP or whatever your local currency is at it by buying a better laptop.
Or get a time machine and go to the future where laptops are better than desktops.
Or spend the same sort of money on a new desktop with a Core I7 CPU and a GPU like the Geforce 9800 GT.
The game is CPU dependent, more so than it should be, so even your GPU would probably be sufficient, it's the CPU that is the problem.
There is nothing you will do with that laptop to increase the performance above what you already get aside perhaps putting more RAM in if possible or perhaps overclocking the CPU, which I can't advise you on as I don't know how to, I do know that in a laptop it's not really advisable to do that though.
And I'm saying that from experience because I run it on an Asus M70VM which has a 2.26 Core 2 Duo CPU, nVidia 9600M GS 512MB (DDR2 or GDDR2 version I think) and 4GB of RAM and I only get 20-25 fps, which is far more playable than what your getting but it's still not fast enough at times. -
and i believe your 8600m gt is GDDR2, which is even worse.
Just forget about gta4 ... even a decent gaming desktop is having trouble playing it comfortable.
Speaking of gta4 ... whats so good about it ... lol. Im kinda frustrated that its winning all the gaming awards that it doesnt deserve -
Lol maybe because its like your second life and you can pretty much do anything that the game allowed? Without penalties of course (Not including death cause by hundreds hour of gaming in one instance).

Oh well ... -
I have to admit, you're right. Among the GTA series, I found GTA 3 to be the best in term of gameplay.

Best way to improve your game seriously is lowering graphic settings, if your at the lowest setting and your laptop can't handle the graphics its time for a new laptop. Also depends on your operating system, drivers, settings.
Can you post your OS, what video card / drivers your using - and ingame settings here? would help us understand your problem. -
are u sure u r in high preformance mode ( in the power options )

Whilst there is a good case for this game being cpu dependant, I don't think that the cpu is the be all and end all. Gpu performance (on low end systems at least) does hace an effect.
On my laptop, when running 8600m Gt at stock speeds I get in the region of less than 20 FPS, yet when overclocked I get a boost in the region of 5+ FPS.
So for low power systems at least, the gpu does have an effect.
There's no magic pill that's going to suddenly make your laptop capable of runnning gta at decent playability, The only options that you have are either buying a new laptop or overclocking, and honestly this game isn't worth doing either. -

Buy a desktop. Laptops cant handle the game.

*excuse me* I just dont like gta4 PERIOD
Ive never played it before and probably never will (but ive played gta3 and the other spin-offs, nothing special, not fun at all). Call me a hypocrite or whatever. There are better games than gta4 out there. I just dont understand whats with the hype.
Well ... at least gta4 was released in 2008, so better games can exist to beat the crap out of gta4 -
i played gta4 on xbox360 and PC and ps3, if it doesnt run on your computer/laptop very well
id say buy a ps3 and play it ,and get a bonus blu-ray player to boot *l*
any way to boost gta4 performance?
