So I recently got an m1710 xps, but it's the base model. 1 gig of ram. intel dual core T7200, 7900 GS. It runs decent, but I'd still like to get better performance in cod2. With 4xAA and graphics on medium at 1024 x 768 it struggles to get 50-60 fps. Is this normal? I would think at such a low res it would be able to get better than that. If I try to take the res up any it kills the fps. In the nvidia control panel I've got everything set to best performance. Even when I'm running the hardest games, the laptop doesn't seem to even be trying (fans dont really get louder, doesn't really get much hotter) Any help?

My only advise would be to lower the AA down to X2. Even that will make a Huge difference :D

Upgade your ram to 2gb that will help out somewhat - upgrade your vid card drivers - then test - otherwise yes sacrafice quality for speed.

Dang, my suggestion would've been: if you were going to get a base model xps, you might as well have bought a e1705 with the same video card but hundreds of dollars cheaper.

oh well, since you have the xps, you could very well flash a gtx bios (if youre the adventurous type) on it and get some massive 3d preformance increases (7900GSX mod). It should also be a lot cooler than e1705 versions as the xps is equipped with dual cooling pipes versus one pipe on the 1705. Although this isnt for the faint of heart, and recent dell bios revisions have made this process more difficult than it used to be.

    here's a link to the official 7900gs overclocking thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=64385

The best way to do that would be to flash your GS using GTX BIOS. That will increase your 3DMark scores by 2000+ points.

And download the latest 100.59 drivers, clean up your system, overclock your GPU after flashed.

No its not normal.. Hell i got constant 50fps with stock speeds on my 7900 at 1330x800 or something like tht resolution (i dont remember  ).. Did you apply the dual core patch for CoD2? It has a major boost in fps after installing tht patch! I had 4x AA enabled, Anisotropic in AF settings and all texture settings on extra!
