Happens to a lot of us when our graphics cards reach a temperature where it can't perform as efficient as it used to under cooler temperatures, and therefore downclocks to prevent itself from further overheating. Are you playing any intensive games lately or was it always like this?

Or could be some other issue :p

it was always fine and my temps are always good max 70~
this just started happening recently after i changed drivers from 8.12 to 8.10, there was a lot of issues along the way but i got those solved but this random low fps issue remains

Stop focusing on the driver - just because it appeared to start happening at the same time you installed it doesn't mean that it's the cause.

Any kind of stuttering is usually due to your system accessing the hard drive while your playing. There can be a lot of reasons for this, including background processes, new software installs/updates, changes in system settings, disk space, increased RAM usage (due to RAM reclamation problems after shutting down a program), virus program changes, or not defragging your drive. But the main reason a system accesses a drive during media play is that there isn't enough RAM to run all programs opened and the media in question; it then uses the HD as temporary scratch RAM for the minimum duration of its needs.

Since you said you've already tried to limit background processes, focus on the other possible causes:

Have you installed any new programs or updated any old ones?

Are you running any auto-update features on any program? If you have any Adobe programs they're big candidates.

Have you changed any system settings that would increase RAM usage? You should check to see if the driver update you installed uses more RAM than the old one.

Check your Paging / index file to see if it's getting too full.

When was the last time you defragged your drive? Forget the Windows native defragger - use Diskeeper. It's what most of us in the industry use and you can't beat it.

Have you made any changes to any virus programs, or updated any? Never assume the settings haven't been changed if you've updated it - always check to be sure.

There's a way you can narrow down the culprit if you have a 32 bit system:

One of my favorite tools for finding problems on client systems is a utility program from Tenebril called Memory Boost (it has a 15 day fully functional trial you can download). MB reclaims RAM space from systems that don't automatically reclaim it after programs have been shut down - Toshiba systems are big on that. My Mom has 2 Toshiba notebooks, and she always had RAM recovery problems before I installed MB on her systems.

Memory Boost monitors RAM use in real time and you can monitor it via a SysTray icon. When RAM percentage drops to a certain level, you can set it to automatically reclaim any RAM not reclaimed by the system. You can also reclaim RAM manually if you wish. I used it (still do) on my old desktop for years because I only had 512mb of RAM and I use RAM intensive programs. Even though I've since max'd out my RAM, I still use it because you can never have too much RAM.

The key for your particular issue where MB can help you is that since you could monitor RAM percentage in real time, you can check to see if it drops below the minimum level required when your problem appears. The icon switches to red when it drops below the minimum RAM percentage you set in the program.

Understand that all programs use more RAM than they give back to the system when shut down, and over time no matter how much RAM you have your available amount is going to get too low to run other programs - I'm betting that's what's happening in your particular case. It makes no difference how powerful your system is or how much RAM you have - it will happen. The other option to Memory Boost is to restart your system before running RAM intensive programs to make sure you have the full amount available.

You can learn more about Memory Boost and memory reclamation and download it at Tenebril at this URL: http://tinyurl.com/7abgos

ok well i tried the memory boost program but it wasnt red when it happened

and task manager said i had more than 2 gigs of ram free when it happened.

also i used perfectdisk and my drive is defragged, powerplay didnt help either

also the light that represents hardrive usage doesnt really flicker more when the lag happens

so can can it be
