So i just bought the sony fw p8400 3gb ram with the ati 3470 (haven't opened it yet). I was wondering how the graphics compare to my older laptops ati x1600 (acer aspire 5670 1.66ghz core duo 2gb ram).

From the PC marks i have seen they should theoretically perform about the same gaming wise. I don't play anything like crysis, more like HL2 but look forward to things like SC2, diablo3.

My old laptop is conking out (the fan needs to be repaired and my guess is that there might be more damage related to heat.)

I think the 3470 should be a bit faster than the x1600 plus it has support for dx10, the x1600 is directx9 only.

Thanks Ceenote, that's what i figured but i feel like im being cheated somehow. Only issue now is the fact that sony doesn't provide 64 bit vista or the drivers for it.

Jonhapimp the only thing better is the 3dmark01 and 03 how much do those even matter anymore? (it gets better scores in 05 and 06

I'm not sure how trustworthy that list is. According to this list, the x1400 is roughly the same as the 3470. in reality it doesn't even perform half as fast. You should take notebookcheck's results with a grain of salt.

Probably gonna keep it but the fact that it doesn't support 64 bit (yet) makes me wonder hwo the dv5z does
    64 bit
    AMD ZM-80 (2.1 GHz)
    15.4" 3GB ram 256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphics
100 bucks less and the warranty extension is cheaper.

where does it say it is the roughly the same as the 1400 plus i said it was out of order and according to it the highest score is stronger than the 3470 also it's real world performance that matters that's why i said you will be fine with it

Well according to that list, the 3470 has 20% of the performance of the highest performer and the x1400 19% which just isn't true.

well i geuss i'm wrong even though i'm probably not wrong. i just get defensive. anyway the 3470 is stronger in real world performance which really matters 3d marks really don't matter.
if you can return your laptop for a full refund i would get the hp dv5v if warranty really worries you plus that 100 in your pocket

Yup I'd say it's almost twice as strong.
