So, which do you guys prefer, and why?
I prefer Nvidia because they seem to be taking the lead over ATi by introducing multiple graphics cards in a single PC and their 7800GTX kicks ass!
Don't get me wrong, ATi is good, but I just prefer Nvidia![]()
-
Right now I prefer Ati, and I think Nvidia is also very good. The next time when buying a new MXM card I will see what is the best choice for me. I changed my preference already a few times, because always one has some advantage. Of course 7800 is class of its own. I'd like to have that card.
Right now I feel good with ati - NHC supports it, Ati tray tools, works well and is good. I guess there are also very advanced Nvidia tools, but I just stick with Ati for now. It is very stable, drivers are ok (I hate CCC though), latencies, overclocking and underclocking abilities are remarkable.
Hopefully this thread will not turn into the childish Ati vs Nvidia marketing presentation bull that I have witnessed on some very prominent web sites. (did you see that Powerpoint wiseguys promos?)
Cheers, -
i havn't got any real prefference...the only people that should should be the high tech CAD users who need ATI because its better at handling that sort of thing....
then again i'm not a freakazoid gamer...just long as it plugs in easy and plays my video games at super high rez with all the bells and whistles i dont care Lol -
both have their high and low points.
for css, dod, and hl2 players ati is the way
for opengl nvidia does a little more
I personally like nvidia but ati has their strong points -
Either....I am currently looking at an MSI turion and they tend to bundle ATI's with them...nVidia for the desktop though, as I have never had any luck getting an ATI card to install properly in a desktop (used to manage a computer store).
-
Nvidia gets the edge for me: it's easier to update drivers and the SLI dual-gpu method seems to be easier to integrate and have less issues than ATI's crossfire.
-
I prefer nVidia to ATI. The ATI Catalyst Control Center is such a piece of **** software. nVidia nView is a much more user friendly piece of app. Not to mention that ATI's Crossfire sux.
-
I've used both and I like both. I have a preference for nVidia, but I won't turn down a decent ATi card if the price is right.
-
don't really care either way, for my first computer that i own i have ATI and it works great, but would use Nvidia just as easily without really giving a toss.
I do prefer Nvidia's name though i guess, i just wish you could actually buy gpu's from them directly, can you? -
I will gladly use either, it isn't exactly a determining factor in what notebook I would by if I were looking at similar ATI-Nvidia cards. But I do prefer Nvidia, their drivers/setup are a bit easier to use to me.
-
Yeah, it doesn't matter too much to me in a laptop especially. I want my laptop to handle light gaming, but my desktop is my primary game machine. When I get particular, it's gonna be with my desktop card.
-
Well, I have used ATI Cards (Rage Pro II, 7200) except for my 6800go. I voted Nvidia because of the performance increase, but the better built cards are the ATI cards.
-
I like Nvidia more for a few reasons... all of which are pretty weird.
I like the way they present themselfs. I thought the Nalu demo was really cool, plus their visual theme (including their logo) looks really good. I also like them because they are in the minority of GPU sales. I almost always prefer the brand that is less popular.
Oh and I really like the fact that nvidia is an american company. Good american products are getting rarer and rarer these days. -
I chose ATI for a simple reason:
I have used them forever. I used to have an old 16mb video card by them (i think but i was 5 lol) and have had nothing but ATI since. I did buy an fx5500 256mb by nvidia and liked it but i still tend to stick with ati -
I've used both, in notebooks and desktops, including the GeForce 6800 and X800 XT Platinum cards. My preference is Nvidia. For me, Nvidia cards have run smoother with less driver issues than ATI. I really don't like ATI's CCC control panel. The 7800 GTX Go in my Sager 5720 is absolutely the best video card I've ever used.
-
I refuse to install the ATi Control Panel because it is such a piece of ****. I definately prefer nVidia's control software. I do like however that I could choose to just install the driver and nothing else with my ATi card... I don't remember that being an option with my nVidia cards, but like I said, I didn't mind their software.
-
I'm an Nvidia fan, but for video playback quality and just overall multimedia features and performance I'll have to give it to Ati. They have some awesome packages with their All-In-Wonder models.
For sheer power and overall gaming performance I tip my hat to Nvidia, who also has the better options menu. Ati's CCC is horrible. Keep it simple stupid.
Cheers,
Mike -
what country is ATi from?
also I generally find that Nvidia cards handle pixel shader better than ATi cards -
-
my first desktop had a HIS X850XT, that just would NOT apply any AA/AF no matter what drivers i used. returned it for an EVGA 7800GTX KO w/ACS3, and couldnt be happier. went SLI, got a dell 2005fpw, and at 1680x1050 my sli rig is cranking out about 110fps maxed. i love it.
my asus z70va coming this week has a x700, and i have no doubt that it will be a strong card, but i think i will still prefer nvidia. i think nvidias drivers are easier, and i have had less hassle with nvidia so far...*side note* EVGA ROCKS with their stepup programs.
nvidia > ati
pb,out. -
everyone has to agree that the XFX Geforce 7800GTX 512mb is the best card there is!
-
maybe this came up before but can you guys compare these two?
Ati Radeon X700 128mb vs. NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 128 mb
-
Yah... ATi is from Canada. '______________'

The x700 is more powerful, the 7400 has more features and better battery life. I have a nvidia in my laptop and a ati in my desktop I really dont like CCC but nvidia needs to work more on their mid range cards.
-
I don't really prefer either as long as they work fine, but I am biased toward Nvidia - they always seem on top of things and their GPUs provide great performance IMO. Don't get me wrong, I like ATI to, but right now I feel Nvidia has an edge over ATI.
-
ATI, sounds nicer
, and well my experience with ATI has always been good, my next notebook will have an ATI aswell, though if it has a Nvidia I wouldnt mind. It doesnt matter to me, it depends on the card in discusssion!
-
Who here thinks that "Geforce Go" should be renamed to "GoForce"?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The GoForce is a product, actually, for phones and other handheld devices.

oh yeah! silly me!
the gizmondo had one! -
In a laptop it doesn't matter, but for desktop definitely ATI all the way. No cheating with 3dmarks, crap anisotropic filtering, generally hacking, late whql certification, long history of "optimzing" (read cheating in benchmarks). So wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Having said that CCC is crap and I wish ati would bring the old control panel back. I mean ati spent so much time developing the control center and it still turns out crap, proving that 99% of people prefer the simple solution to managing the gpus settings. Other than that ati are top notch in my book, power, peformance, image quality, reliability, innovation and red is better than green.
-
I prefer Nvidia's controls. Also they have nice vibrant colour controls which ATi doesn't
-
"red is better than green"
I think not...
(Pssst. The red one is boring) -
Any card will do for me. In my notebook I wanted an Nvidia card since they have been the leader in the Gammer notebook industry for many years now. As for my desktop, I have a 9700 pro in that that I bought 6 weeks after it came out and basically I was looking to dish out $450 on the best card that money can buy at the time and it happened to be the 9700 Pro and I still love that card to death that's still inside my P3 system even though I am running a 6800 go in my notebook.
With Nvidia and ATI, you really can't go wrong with either company these days as in terms of performance and support. Back about a few years ago, I would tell anyone to buy an nvidia card over ATI because of ATI's bad driver support at the time but that has all changed.
There was a time when I was down with good old "3DFX" all the way until of course they got bought out by Nvidia. 3DFX went under because they insisted on building their own boards and chips instead of out sourcing it and not to mention, their silly idea of how many GPU's can we fit on a board...... -
I just ordered a sony vaio FS415M yesterday in my local PC World. It ships with a 128MB nVIDIA GeForce Go 6400 with TurboCache graphics card. Is this suitable enough to play 'GTA-San Andreas' in its full glory? Also has it enough power to run MS Vista with 'Aero Glass'? My total DDR2 RAM is also 2GB. I have tried to make vista as welcome as possible, will it work?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Yes, it will run Aero Glass just fine. With 2GB of RAM, Vista will run nicely.
-
Would it still run aero glass with 1GB of ram?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Yeah, but I'd go with 2. Multitasking will be much better.
-
I mainly like Nvidia, but have to say ati for video capturing and tv hook up. Unless there is an Nvidia video capture card that i don't know about.
-
ATI for mobile
Nvidia for desktop
for me in the mobile segment, a laptop is exactly that, a portable machine, and the ATI range in this segment is simply awesome
on the desktop its hard to go past 2 7800GTX's in SLI tho -
Nvidia... they make faster cards.... That get better benchmark scores... and get better FPS on the newer games usually. But I don't mind either
-
I prefer ATI, loving this X1900XT. You guys should reconsider ATI, this company has really come along now and isn't like back in the GF2/Radeon 75xx days when its drivers were buggy and crap
-
-
I've had both in laptops, they weren't really comparible though, as my Nvidia was in my old Satellite, which only had a 16MB card, and my M60 has a 128MB X600SE card, but they were both good cards in my opinion. I wouldn't choose one over the other, although either over a GMA
.

Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Anything dedicated I would take over the GMA900.
In desktops, ATI is the current king of performance with the X1900XT, but in laptops, the tides turn as Nvidia has the fastest, the Go7800GTX. Nvidia has, since the intro of the Go6800, been number 1 in performance for laptops, although ATI controls the mid-end and low-end. -
my desktop has a recently bought nividia 5500 awsome card
-
The 7800 is a really good card. Unfortunately mines on the Dell 16 pipe one but it does the job. The 7800GTX is a flyer. As was said earlier. Nvidia for laptops and ati for desktop.
-
NVIDIA, better drivers, better support for linux, better cards.....nuff said
-
I complete agree. I would care less for performance, but can not take buggy drivers of ATI. You need to be a IT expert to be able to update/get ATI drivers working properly(if you lucky enough).
ofcourse, sometimes, pure luck may be able to that -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
ATI's had a solid set of drivers lately, the best were the 5.11, 5.13, 6.12, 6.13. Others worked with the exception of 5.12, which I never installed.
Updating has never been a problem for me either, I just download and install them.
