hi, i know there is already a thread on this but its quite old and no answer was found.

My system is a hp nc8430
    2ghz core duo
    x1600
    1gb ram

When i play half life 2: episode one, in certain places the game crashes and i get an infinite sound loop and BSOD and ati2dvag infinite loop error message.

ive tried the latest drivers from HP and ATI 7.4 (with and without CCC), i uninstalled the drivers before uninstalling the new ones, but i still get this very frustrating problem

thx for any help you can provide

It could very well be the game. Do you have any other 3D games you could test?

One thing you could try is disabling HDR.

    Thanks for the reply
I've tried supreme commander, CSS, Half life 2 DM and they all work fine, not to mention the fact the supcom is a lot more demanding than HL2.

Ill try disabling HDR, but a game a year old (several updates) couldn't really be the sole cause of a BSOD could it?

Ive read about this problem through google for 2002/3/4 when AGP cards were used but couldn't find any "modern" solutions.

Since you have no problems with other games, I'd move to say that it is HL2: LC causing the problem.

One other thing to try is fooling around with the sound options. Also try reinstalling DirectX from Microsoft's website.

i used to get a loop in the sound and the game froze too. while it was frozen i either turned down the sound or plugged in headphones and it oddly got up to speed. i dont know why it does that but im assuming its got something to do with the speakers vibrating something in the notebook. try it next time u play the game.

im using a LCD monitor with speakers so its not the vibrations from the notebook. ill try -nosound though

i tried to update DX but its fully up to date

EDIT: turning off HDR fixed the problem, but the game looks no where near as good :(. It makes sense that HDR caused the problem as the crashed occurred in specific places every time. I'm still looking for a way to play without crashes with HDR if possible.

It appears i was wrong :( i have turned off HDR and the game is still crashing in certain places :(, any ideas guys?

    thx

EDIT: this is weird but after the crash (no BSOD this time) if i try to launch supreme commander i get the message "unable to create direct 3d" restarting fixes this however o_O

Did you reinstall DirectX? Don't just update it.

a new thing i found is that if the game crashes (and doesn't BSOD) then the visual direct 3D tests in DXDIAG ALL fail, this is also fixed by just restarting.

This leads me to think that it is actually DX causing the problem, but i never new u could even uninstall DirectX let alone do it safely AND reinstall it.

So i would appreciate some help on that

    thx
