For the price, look for something with a core 2 duo processor, 2Gb of RAM and a GeForce 8600GT (or ATI HD2600). Other equipments like screen size/resolution, hard drive capacity, wireless, etc. are at your own discretion. You could get these settings in pretty much any brand. Dell Inspiron usually have decent pricing if you're not an Anti-Dell, HP is also good, as well as really any brand you might prefer.

Dell Inspiron 1520 has a $425 off coupon right now and can get XP installed too for the moment. Well equipped for under $1300:
T7500 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo
8600m GT 256MB DDR2
1680x1050 TL Display
2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
160GB 5400 RPM HDD
DVDRW
Windows XP Pro
Or save a couple hundred bucks by getting Vista Home Premium or Windows XP Home, 1280x800 display, and T7300 2.0GHz CPU. Absolutely cannot beat this deal at the moment. A top notch 15" notebook for a little over $1000! -

Why not a Sager NP2090? Same specs as the Dell, with around the same price. The superior build quality and support/service is well worth the 100-200 dollars, IMO.
