I was a huge fan of Icewind and Baldur's and am looking for another rpg to get hooked on. However, I do not want to 'subscribe' to anything or have to be online to play. What are the best stand-alone (offline) rpg games around?
I guess another question is whether or not these new online rpgs are fun when played alone offline.
Thanks

star wars knights of the old-republic II is pretty good

If you can wait, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is coming out, I don't think there is a release date yet though. Dependind on whether you prefer 1st or 3rd person RPG's.
-
yup...i am DEFFINETLY gonna get that game!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Morrowind, while a few years old now, is quite an impressive RPG game. One of my favorites!
-
My most favorite RPGs, of all time, are Fallout 1 and 2. Pretty old games from 1997 and 1998 repectively. Can get it for $10 or cheaper at Wal-Mart. Highly recommended!!!
-
i love Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII...they were amazing!!!!!!!
-
FF6 was my most favorite.
-
Someone already mentioned this but I just want to put in that Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are both good RPGs.
-
I loved Knights of the Old republic 1 and 2, LOVED LOVED Morrowind.....CANT WAIT for OBLIVION.... 3rd person Neverwinter Nights Platinum edition...SUPER SUPER GOOD if u likes Baulders gate and Iswindale like me.....hope that helps....all of the ones I mentioned are within the 3 year spand...all very very good single player experience

I'm not a big gamer so I'm really not sure if this even fits but how bout Diablo 2? Does this fit into this category? I also enjoyed the expansion set as well.
And I was wondering, do these sorts of games require a hefty dedicated video card? I played Diablo2 expansion on my desktop & I believe it's sporting a Nvidia geforce 2, 32mb -- which I'm guessing is not much to brag about.

isn't diablo 2 mainly an online RPG??...i used to play it online and then stopped because i got bored of it
-
-
ahh...i see now...never played neverwinter nights tho
-

-
what is "Baulders Gate style rpg"..i never heard of that type...??
-
well its like Icewindale II or Baulder's Gate...3rd person but not as much action like as Diablo 2.... its not just click and kill but a little more story, character kinda type....but the main theme is still kill monters....
-

Neverwinter Nights is a favorite, and so is Everquest, Everquest II. You can play all these offline if you want, they have pretty good single player story lines.
-
i don't think that they're out yet
-
I recently began playing Dungeon Siege. It was included on the DVD when I purchased a new video card for my desktop system at home. I have only played the single player so far, but have found it very enjoyable. It was released in 2002, but I'm not sure of the hardware specs.

The question as i find it is best ofline RPG.
RPG = Role Playing Game
Best ever RPG is planescape. I would also recomend arcanium to Baldur fans.
Now if you are looking for a hack and slash or a mix of both alot of the games you suggested should be considered.
Concerning Kotor and Kotor II. pls note that the engine used is the silliest engine even more so in Kotor II with the surroundings that move rather than the characters.
Finally if you want mostly puzzle solving the tombraider series do apply. -

Nobody mentioned Final Fantasy 7 yet? Yeah, ok, it's really old, but the story is great and the graphics are a step up from the old 2d sprites of the older FF games. It gets a little slow in the middle of the game, but when the Weapons show up it really takes off all the way to the ending.
It's by far the best RPG I've ever played even against some of the newer ones out there.

The best rpg of all time.
Well, I'll tell you I have a special place in my heart for Shadowrun on the old sega genesis.
Fallout 2 was cool, how often can one be a gun toting porn star with a 57 chevy in a post apocalytic world.
Baldurs gate, neverwinter nights, planscape were all great games. I'm afraid that bioware is lossing its edge though I just dont like the new stuff as much as the older stuff especially since they have gone to X-box. -

FF IX is my all time favorite (probably cuz that's 1 of the 3 offline rpgs I've ever finished)

Chrono TRigger, Secret of Mana, Xenogears, FF Tactics, Dragon Warrior 8 is coming out this November. I forgot this square rpg where you play this guy with a sword and you go in a dungeon and unlock this mystery. I think the opening scene is where he fights a dragon and in the end he kills the evil guy only to take the power and become the evil one.
Ahh I remember it now. Vagrant Story. Coooool game. -
Dungeon Siege is a really fun RPG, and DS2 is coming out this week!
-
Another vote for Dungeon Seige!! I had so much fun playing this back in 2002. But now I have moved on to bigger and better things (World of Warcraft
)

Voting for the original Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. KOTOR2 was also fun, but didn't have the storyline that 1 did.
KOTOR rules!
best offline rpg?
