thanks a bunch.

Bioshock.
Fantastic game. -
Call of Duty: World At War.
-
WaW didn't convince me. I liked CoD4 better.
-
Half Life 2.
If you want something more recent, then Call of Duty 4. (I didn't like the new one).
Fallout 3 and Bioshock are absolutely brilliant but they are FPS-RPG's. They are both highly recommended. -
thanks for the suggestions guys keep them coming. -

If you want the modern: Call of Duty 4, WW2: Call of Duty World at War, I can't shoot straight to save myself: Fallout 3 (not really a shooter), the 'others' are Half Life 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect.
-
Mass Effect is NOT an FPS. It is an Action RPG. Same with Fallout 3-technically speaking.
Take it from the others who've already posted: Half-Life 2 will do you no wrong.
Farcry 2 is also good. -
On that note, I would suggest that the OP buys the Orange Box. (It includes Half Life 2 and episodes).
Five of the best games around, in one package. It's unbeatable value. -

The Orange Box will give you a lot of playtime - HL2, HL2: Ep 1 & 2, HL2: Lost Coast. Good stuff.
Fallout 3 will give you probably over 100 hours of playtime. As noted, it is not actually an FPS though is played from the FPS point of view. Excellent game.
I don't recommend the Call of Duty series for single-player; the campaign is way too linear. CoD4 and CoD: WaW are mainly for multiplayer. -
bioshock is very different from fallout 3. it's similar to system shock 2.
i just finished the game, had a blast, although i thought it was too easy. -
Half Life 2 and its episodes. By far the best FPS ever made.
EDIT: Single player FPS, that is. -
Bioshock is excellent, but it's shares no relation to an RPG, it's an FPS with some puzzle elements, and a great storyline IMO.
All of the Half Life 2 games are great, but not really all that lengthy. You'll most likely beat HL2 and the two episodes in under 20 hours, but even after your done with those, there's still hundreds of hours of single player mods out there that are actually really good. Such as here
CoD4 is pretty short if you play it on easy or normal, where you can just go in guns blazing and take a hundred shots, but play it on the hardest difficulty and it will be alot more challenging, and thus longer. -
I liked both. I think COD4 was a little better story, and since it gets off WWII, but it was really short. So, overall,i think WaW was better. -
ok thanks for the suggestions guys
so far im going to go with 'orange box' and 'bioshock' they seem to have been enjoyed by all of you. -
You will get a lot of playtime out of them
Bioshock has good replay value, beacuse of all the choices (weapons, plasmids, harvesting or saving) you'll get what I mean once you play it
Orange box is great beacuse there are so many games on it.
If you play a few hours a day then the Half Life series should last you some time.
I haven't played Portal, only the demo but it was a lot of fun.
A very unique game play technique
Have fun and GAME ON!! -
I would vouch for Half Life 2 before Biosuck, I mean Bioshock. Consider me not a fan, besides the glitches and technical problems, I can't get into the gameplay. Plasmids are intuitive, but I can't stand continually hacking, avoiding cameras and turrets, searching every common object for more crackers or cigs (useless), etc.
-
But it did get repetitive at times -
Bioshock is a great singleplayer experience (but only if you can get into the story). However, its pretty short and most ppl I kno don't want to play it twice. Orange Box is the better option for the sheer amount of content you'll get out of it.
-
Dead Space if you mention "Shooter" instead
.
Second the HL2 series if you haven't play them. Easily provides more than 20 hours of game play or more if you rise the difficulty.
CoD 4 is good but short, can finish them in pretty short time even at maximum difficulty. -
I really enjoy Halo 1 single player a lot.
-
Crysis!
I haven't played Warhead yet. -
+ HL2, +Bioshock
I've loved the story telling. -
I thought Crysis was excellent but I stopped playing because I got annoyed by going from realistic jungle stealthy warfare setting to the stupid big aliens wanting to kill us all. I think the game would have been a lot better with a realistic setting from start to finish. Oh well, at least there are lots of custom single player missions to try out.

lol im playing crysis warhead right now and its fun. the aliens are crazy but at least you get to shoot them.
-
Bar none Far Cry (1). Simply amazing game that still looks great and will almost certainly run on any hardware. (It is 5yrs old) Steam has it for 10 bucks. Get it, NOW!!!!
Half Life 2 is also a great choice. -
But this is hard at times man, they move too fast -
CoD: World at War and CoD 4 are both brilliant games. Depends whether you like modern or ww2. imo, world at war has a better campaign, but it is your choice.

COD4. Still my favorite.
-
I have been playing Brothers in Arms - Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood and find them really enjoyable. Since they are quite old you should be able to max them out and the graphics are still pretty good.

Call of Duty 4's story might not be long, but it is awesome quality wise. I highly recommend COD4.
-
Nazi Zambies Ftw!!!!!!!
-
I tried hard to like it, did not work. -
Id say Call of Duty 4 hands down, it is absolutely awesome! Everything seems so real and you feel like your progressing not like the other single players you feel that over time it gets boring. Portals single player is pretty challenging, I like L4D's single player also pretty cool.

I love all of the COD games!
-
Yeach, my vote goes to Half Life 2 and Episodes.
Then Far Cry 1, then perhaps F.E.A.R. 1. -

My fav single player FPS was Dead Space. I played it start to end and thats very rare for me. So thats a good since that its an excellent game.
Beyond that if you have not played them, get the orange box or something so you can play through the half-life 2 series, they were also really good and I finished them all.
CoD4 was a super excellent 1 player game, probably one of the best scripted and most immersive games I have played, but its flaw is that its very short and then your left going online and that got dull really fast to me. -
If you're willing to overlook that little nitpick over definitions, dead space is a solid game. -
CALL OF DUTY 1....excellent game though,a bit old..
-
Cod4 Online : Dull?

I think mostly people would recommend COD4 while it's pretty short (and me too). If you want something longer, I'd suggest Half life 2 also.
-
COD4 recommendation from me too. One of the best single player FPSs I've played. Epic storyline and awesome graphics. Wish the enemies were a bit smarter though.
-
due, there is only one.
Duke Nukem: Forever
that is all -
COD4 was the first ever FPS i played. i agree it has very short story line but i loved it (played like 6 - 7 times, m crazy i know.). and no comments on HL2 .......... only thing i can say about these games is that they are simply "AMAZING" great story line and amazing multiplayer system and you can't miss them .......
if you thinkin about getting HL2 .... Orange Box is the way to go ...
-
yeap well guys ive ordered "orange box" i just dont think i can commit to a game like CoD4 when i wont be playing it online, and FPS are my first choice gender, so i dont think i could see my self playing through the single player story a tonne, hence my hesitation in buying it.
im considering CoD WaW but still not sure of the single player game length. -
im apparently too late for input, but u made the rite decision. the orange box will get you hooked on the HL2 series. the first HL2 game has ALOT of lil' mini games (like put the brick in a basket to swing down items) lol. They played with the physix wen it first came out. u have to rele think about what u wanna do. Plus, imo the storyline is more intricate than Fallout3. You can get sucked into it more, even though its Actually more unrealistic... (aliens vs. genetic mutaitons lol) Have fun and soon you'll be screaming at valve for Episode 3 lol
best single player FPS around?
