best single player FPS around?

Being a gaming n00b, I really cannot comment on anything but the two games I have owned.

Half Life 2 was a great game. Being a very novice gamer it did get very difficult at times, but the graphics were great and the game play was very solid. I can see why it won so many awards.


Bioshock was a masterpiece in my honest opinion. I've never played a game that had me drawn into the story like Bioshock. The graphics are amazing, the storyline is great, and the game play in my opinion was fantastic. Like I said, I am a gamer novice and I found it extremely enjoyable. It is one of those games that I was actually sad to finish, lol. It really did live up to the hype, for me.

Try the Fear 2 demo. It looks great and plays very good.

For HL2, download the Fake Factory mod. It adds high-def textures and improves basically all the graphics. It works with HL2 and both expansions.

 

It looks alright, but he totally destroyed the character models.

 

I would have to say BF2142 which is a very fun game that have future weapons and doesnt require a super powerful gpu to look good.

 

Good choice if you had to pick just one and especially if you cant get online that was the best choice.

It has been on sale as cheap at $20-25? I think so I hope you did not pay too much for it.

 

Fake Factory mod destroys the character models and the entire feel of the game changes. I still like the original better.

Playing through HL2 it's good to keep in mind that this was the first game to have realistic physics implemented the way they were.

 

i payed the equivalent of $20 for the orange box so im happy with that for what it offers.

what about Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway or the other games of this franchise???

it's a nice game too, and the story is pratically a movie. I've watched the Band of Brothers TV Serie in DVD, the game is almost the same thing, awesome. I recommend!

I am not far into this game but so far I think it is great. I highly recommend it but then I like all of the other parts of the series as well.

What stands out for me is that your AI team mates are actually useful and are smart enough to do things without being told.

though if i were you i would also look into mass effect, not really a pure fps, but it is imo a much more fun game than both half life 2 and bioshock, just a amazing story
crysis is good too if you like a straight up fps

I agree 100% CoD 4 single player was FANTASTIC! Too bad it was so short. But I'll take a solid fun single player experience any day over a boring, monotonous, or too hard to finish long one.

But CoD 4 multiplayer is pathetic IMHO, at least if you're used to games like BF2, Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six type games.

Half Life series

 

I have Half Life on my Laptop but I have not got around to playing it yet. Do you guys recommend playing this before Half Life 2 + the episodes or do you think it will not really make any difference?

Play Half Life one first. If you jump into HL2 first, you will not have a clue as to who you are and why you are there doing what you are doing. It is a really great story line that needs to be played out to fully enjoy it. If you need a break then before jumping into HL2, play Portal (Orange Box).

Can Half life be played at 1680 1050 resolutions? Anyone know how to set this, I bet it will be more enjoyable at this maximum resolution thats all.

 

You can always get Half Life from Amazon for cheap, I have got many games from them both local and international.

unless you are a diehard FPS player, you wont enjoy HL1 now.
even though it is one of the best games i ever player,
i couldn't tolerate playing it much when i tried a few months ago.
the gfx is outdated..TOO MUCH.

 

i got hl1 for 1usd on steam when they were celebrating the 10th aniversary.
i'd say the gfx is acceptable, barely though. the engine is like 13 years old (modified quake engine).

No, don't use the Fake Factory mod. It's what happens when horny guys get access to the ability to program graphics for a video game. It kills the quality of what the original Half Life 2 ways.

Regarding HL1, even without being die hard FPS, it's still great fun.

I am far from a diehard fps player but I have started playing HL1 for the first time on my Asus G1SN Laptop. I am really enjoying it and can already see exactly why it is so highly praised. The graphics are obviously outdated but this has not bothered me at all.

Maybe it is because I still play many other older games such as GTA SA, Vice City, Tiberian Sun, BIA - Road to Hill 30 which all have outdated graphics compared to newer games.
