my battle field 2 disk is scratched and as a result it wont start up anymore, do i have to go buy a new copy of the game? (no cd patches wont work because punk buster checks the disk too apparantly)

You could try a cd repair kit.
I've never used one so I don't know if they're any good.

Either that or try to get the CD replaced. I know some companies allow you to (like Blizzard entertainment. When I scratched my WoW DVD I sent it in with 10$ to get it replaced). So you'd have to contact EA games to see if they replace scratched or broken CDs.

I find it really annoying to have to take the disc around with me whenever I want to play, so I use a mini-image with Daemon tools and I've never had problems with punkbuster (other than being kicked for excessive lag... I hate my connection sometimes). That said, it's also possible to get a replacement disc; you'd probably have to mail the original in.

I think EA has a decent CD replacement program but you could also torrent an image of the necessary disc to play with. It's a popular game so someone has undoubtedly copied it and you have a CD key and the originals if you break the odds and actually get called on using pirated software.

EDIT: BTW, Iron what is a mini image? Is there some way of just copying what's necessary to run the game instead of a full DVD or CD or am I just hoping fervently so I don't have to carry my bulky CD case around anymore?

A mini image is an image file that you can get from sites like megagames or gamecopyworld that mimics the entire CD/DVD, but the file size is usually only a fraction of the real .iso. Some games take a bit of extra work to fool more advanced CD-check programs like Starforce, but it's easily doable. And legal, assuming that you own the original, and just want to play it without lugging about a bunch of CDs.

Mini-images work fine. I use them as I have several computers, so I don't like to have to swap the disc around so much...
