$39.99 for NWN2 + MotB + Mysteries of Westgate (when it comes out). couldn't pass it up.

Trouble is the game is running very bad on my desktop's x800XT. I want to give it a try on my laptop to see if a SM3.0 card / core 2 duo will be able to run it a bit better. Problem is my DVD-drive is dead...I was wondering if any of you know a way to play the game without a dvd.
If not its not a big deal since I will probably be picking up a new laptop in a month or so (dead dvd drive, battery that lasts 20 minutes, GPU that has artifacts 80% of the time/crashes multiple times a day, and blue screens have finally gotten to me). :p

Also, I'd like some thoughts on NWN2, is it a good game? I heard it wasn't as good as the first one but still a solid RPG. Also I heard the expansion + patch 1.13 made it a lot better. Confusing thread I know but feel to answer either of my questions :)

I don't know what game you're talking about but in order to play it without the DVD you will need to search for a no DVD crack for it.

He will still have to install it somehow.

And he is talking about Neverwinter Nights 2.

well he can create an ISO image from his DVD and transfer it to his laptop via USB drive then mount it using Daemon tools or similar program. Then install, and crack. Assuming he has a legal copy of the game there's nothing wrong with this.

You do realize that talking about those things is against the forum rules, correct?

I can't answer the 1st question, but I can tell you my specs and performance. With an e6600 @ 3.0ghz, 4 gb ddr-800 ram, 8800 gts 640mb, I was able to run the game at 1680x1050 with all detail settings on/high except shadow quality. They caused a big performance drop so I left those at medium. I had smooth gameplay in-game and cutscenes from what I remember.

As for NWN1 vs 2, I haven't played 1 in a long time. I would say that NWN2 was at least as enjoyable if not more so. I think people were disappointed that the graphics didn't match up to games released around the same time. The campaign is long with a good story and some interesting turns. The expansion MOTB is very good; it's basically packed from beginning to end with little downtime. It is also much more difficult (in a good way) which is 1 of 2 complaints I can remember from NWN2 - too easy. The other complaint being consequences to decisions, which was also fixed with MOTB. Good stuff all around. For the rule sets and such, I'm not into that so I don't know how accurate they are or if that was a source of criticism as well.

As you might know, I read a 2nd expansion is on it's way for a Christmas release this year.

Doesn't matter, it is against forum rules, whether he owned 10 copies of the game or not.

The forum rules prohibit the discussion of illegal activities. As I have done no such thing I would politely request that we get back on topic. If he has purchased the game there is nothing wrong or illegal with creating an ISO image of the disc, mounting it, and running it with a crack. If you still feel I am violating the forum rules, report me, but try not to derail the thread please.

I have no interest in "reporting" you, I just know you are new, I am not. I know how this forum works, and respect them. When any talk of cracks or no-cd patches go on, I politely let the party know that it is against forum rules. I still to this day have yet to see someone talk about a No-CD crack without owning the game. Most people use them so they don't have to insert the CD everytime, but it is still against forum rules.

There is nothing wrong about talking about no-cd cracks or anything of the sort as long as link1313 has a legal copy of the game which he stated he bought the game so that means its probably legal. If link were asking how to install an downloaded copy of nwn2 or something, it would be illegal but everything protomenace has said conforms to forum rules.

I understand, I have just seen other threads shut down for the same talk.

Case- 3 days ago someone was talking about how they didn't want to put their CD in the laptop everytime they wanted to play Diablo II. Someone suggested a No-CD patch, and mod's informed them that talk of that was prohibited.

Maybe I am wrong, but I have seen thread after thread be shut down for such thing, even though technically there is nothing "wrong" with it.

    Here is the thread.

    Quoted from LowlyMarine-

"Well, addressing the question of the legality of No-CD "cracks" or patches, it's a tough nut. The general consenus is that since you are not violating copyright law so long as you own the game, that they are not inherently illegal. They may, however, violate the game's EULA, though the enforceability of EULAs is somewhat questionable.

Nonetheless our official stance is that the discussion of such things on the forums is not permitted. Since an official and therefore unquestionably legal solution was found, however, I will leave this topic open. Ya'll play nice now."

Not trying to be a nark at all, just trying to save some heat. ;)

No no, I wouldn't overstep my boundaries, and I hate playing "mod-boy", but I feel bad when things are misinterpreted.

Back on topic, hopefully Link gets this game working!

Alright thanks for all the help guys. Ill give Daemon tools a try, hopefully that will trick my computer into thinking it has the CD in it. I have no problem waiting a month either. The external dvd drive is a good idea but I'd rather not buy one, I will check if anyone I know has one I can borrow :p

If you are going to play this game there are a few Mods that are almost essential to make your gaming worthwhile.
They are Tony K, improved AI - That's the BIG one. I can't stress this one enough.
There are also a few mods that fix spells/abilities etc.
The community mods are what make this game really shine.

Here is a link to the NWN2 site, read up on the mods, there is a link to essential add ons, and dont forget to ask questions.

On a tangent, regardless of whether or not no-dvd cracks are illegal or otherwise...

NWN2 and MotB have both been available as digital downloads from the atari store for the same price as a disk version - and of course if you buy that version, there's no need for a DVD at all by design. They are working on some sort of extended drm for MoW, but I would expect it to be also offered via digital download if that's your preference. (In fact, i was under the assumption that the standard way to get content packs was by download anyway).

If that's the case, why not wait a bit and see if they make a similar offer for the digital versions of NWN2?

Oh, and if you did buy the gold edition like I did, they no longer have the free MoW expansion included. I thought that was the case as well.

People have already answered the DVD question, so just let me chime in about the game.

I loved NWN2 and the expansion... and even more so the community mods.
I was really hopeful for more, but the MoW expansion just seems so vaporware.

I loved the NPC interaction... the gnome and dwarf banter was worth putting up with the annoying gnome just to hear the dwarf rip into him.

The dry, wisecracking mage (whose name escapes me right at this moment) STILL makes me ROFL from time to time and I have heard it all before.

I still boot up this game to try a character build and play through the game from time to time for fun.

Which exact mods should I download, could you provide a direct link? (sorry to be a bother i just dont want to install the wrong ones).

Also, would I still be able to use these mods in online play?

This is the link to Reeron's increased difficulty and Pen and Paper spells. He also has a combo in there for Increased diff + random item generator.

    http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NWN2Scripts.Detail&id=99

This is one for Tony K's AI. It makes your party MUCH more helpful in battle and let's you customize their actions. They will now switch weapons in battle, use items/scrolls/spells like they are supposed to. It ALSO makes the enemies behave MUCH more realisticly, making battle MUCH more realistic and challenging. Check the settings, you can ALSO make enemies use items that they have on them as loot. IF you use Tony 's AI with the Random Item it makes it GREAT fun as enemies can wreak havoc on you with all sorts of fun stuff. I had a group of random thugs drop a Greater Air Elemental summoning stone and use it on my party. It was wild to see that thing rip through and almost wipe us out.

Tony's is essential. It really is. The random item and increased challenge are imo essential as well, it makes the game alot harder than it is, and it's normally very easy, even on hardcore.

Read the posts on where to install them, you usually will put them in Mydocuments/neverwinternights2/override folder.

NOT in the program files one, the one that will be in your documents folder.

And yes, you can play MP with them as well, but some communties have their own hakpaks that you will need to install, depending on which world you vie for.

BTW, Storm of Zehir (NWN2 xp2), is being marketed as the BG2ish epic-like story that players have always wanted...except how do you fit an epic campaign into only 15 hours of game time?

At any rate..something worth checking out when it comes out maybe.
