hello everybody. i'm waiting for my new hp dv9500t to arrive, but i'm a bit depressed about the fact that it has the 8600m GS in it instead of the inspirons which come with the 8600m GT. I knew before ordering that the GT is superior to the GS, but I couldn't order the dell because a relative is bringing my pc over from the US and if i had gone for the dell, what with their ridiculous shipping times, i wouldn't have gotten any laptop at all.

i'm really looking forward to playing games like bioshock, crysis etc. on my laptop, but i doubt i'll be able to run them even in medium.

    ah, sadness...

Your not as sad as me. I brought a Vostro 1400 with the 8400 GS as my sister wanted a thin and light laptop, yet for only 0.85p ($2) more i was offered by dell the Vostro 1500 with the 8600 GT instead of the 8400 GS, a bigger hard drive, integreted webcam free and a better processor. But in the end its my sisters laptop so i had to order the 1400, eventhough it was like stabbing myself in the back knowing i will regret it.

i used the hp you are getting with the 8600M GS, dont be too dissapointed because i was satisfied. all the games i tried to run (battlefield2, c+c3, supreme commander) all worked fine. the only trouble i did have was on "stalker" in the wide open areas. but this was fixed easily by adjusting the settings. i think you'll be more happy than you expect.

manzi, you have my sympathies dude. but if i were you, i would have duped my sister and still gotten the superior system. i mean, once it had already been delivered, then there would have been no alternatives.

kraz30g, i hope you're right. i'm not a performance freak. i just want to play the newer games with some of the nice stuff on.

Ive looked at the GT vs. GS and the GS has more Stream Processors, so that would make me think it was better.

OK, sry, i checked again i had them mixed up, but i saw that even though the GT has less stream processors, the 16 of them are higher clocked, so wouldnt they even out in preformance

erm you still have them the wrong way round lol.

The GT has 32 stream processors and im pretty sure their clocked higher, also the memory bus is bigger.

GT is quite alot faster than the GS. but the GS is still a good card.

OK, the GT has 32 stream processors but they are clocked LOWER. while the GS has 16 which are clocked higher. This evens out the make the GT about 20-30% faster than the GS.

The GS scores like 2300 on 3dmark06 while the GT scores 2900's or 3400's depending on if you get the DDR2 or DDR3 model.

I was also looking into getting the DV9500T. I currently have a DV6000z, it has the 2.0Ghz AMD dual core, 2GB RAM, Nvidia go 7200, 120GB HDD, 15.4 Brightview.

The main reason I am looking at upgrading is because I installed the game Bioshock and couldn't even play it on my laptop without being really choppy (even with the graphics turned all the way down). I think it is this way because of the video card and the AMD running hot hence slower processor speeds.

Anyways, I was looking at getting the DV9500T with 2.2 GHZ Intel core 2 duo, 2 GB or RAM (I'm buying the 2x2GB RAM from Newegg because it is cheaper), Vista Ultimate 64 bit, the Nvidia 8600 GS, 17 HD Brightview, and the 120GB 7200 HDD.

I want this laptop to be able to play all the newer games, even if the graphics are in the middle. If you guys could give me your opinions, especially the people that currently own one, on whether or not this laptop will truly be able to handle the newer games. I wish they offered a better video card, but will this video card be able to handle it?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and help.

Find a laptop with an 8600m GT. The GT easily outclasses the GS and a laptop with it doesn't cost much more.

I would recommend getting the Asus C90S, Asus G1, or Sager NP2090 (Compal IFL90).

Is the 8600m GT that much better than the 8600m GS?

I like the HP laptops a lot and want to know if the 8600m GS will be able to handle current games and future games. I don't care if the graphics are on medium, if it can handle the games without being choppy I'll be fine with it.

    Thanks again!

Yes, the 8600M-GS should handle current and future games (for a couple of years, at least) smoothly, if you don't mind turning down settings and/or resolution as games get more graphics intensive.

Thank you Odin243 for your response. I don't mind turning the graphics down in order to play the games as long as they aren't choppy. I'm getting a really good deal on the laptop and it fits my finances perfectly, so I'm probably going to be purchasing the laptop. I mainly play games on my desktop, but when I travel I want to be able to play on my laptop as well. So this seems like a good solution for the price since most of my gaming is on my desktop PC.

    Thanks again for your responses.
