I need a gaming desktop replacement by end of July so the fastest GPU the market has to offer is the 8700M GT. I heard a lot of people say that 8800M will be released later on so would it be possible to upgrade the 128 bit 8700M to the hopefully 256bit 8800M once its released?

Sticky...you will almost certainly not be able to upgrade the GPU. However, there are some notebooks that will allow for this kind of upgrade and I'd start asking which ones (seriously, there are a few choices) can do that.

There's hope, especially since you haven't purchased yet!

ASUS C90S. You can upgrade most of its parts like a desktop, including the GPU.

If you look in to the sticky on top of the gaming section like night mentioned you should see this thread which talks about the few exceptions.

If you are looking at a 17in notebook that allows GPU upgrades look for the Clevo 570ru or Clevo d900c

As for 15.4 in the only notebook that has a chance for upgradeable graphics is the Asus c90s.

    Yes, Sager 9260, Pro-Star 9191 etc are all D901C's

Everyone likes to say D900C but in reality there haven't been any D900C's seen. No blue laptops! No Smurfmachines!

Keep the MXM type in mind too. The C90S has MXM-II so I doubt you'd ever get a 8800 ( maybe an 8700, but doubtful). The D901Cs have MXM-IV I believe, so those will almost definitely have an 8700/8800 available at some point.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, where would one acquire an 8800 once they became available for the d901c? I understand that you can upgrade, but where you buy them eludes me.

i talked to alienware and they said 8800m will be mxmII, however, some manufactures will probably be able to alter it to fit in their notebooks like clevo or c90 (which is probably the most upgradeable notebook for 15in)
