you cannot upgrade gpu's on laptops. They are soldered into the motherboard. Read the stickys next time

    NO. Read the stickies.

There are better cards, namely the 8800M series, but YOU CAN'T UPGRADE YOUR GPU.

    Read the stickies.

EDIT: lol you guys are so fast :p I type too much

    Yes....
Although you'll have to gut the innards. So you'll have a shell of a laptop, but you will have an 8800gt in there.

indeed. it can be replaced on whatever DELL designed to be able to fit in the laptop.. the graphic card would need to be specifically designed for the particular model of laptop. eventhough other model has the same card model eg. 8600m gt; it most likely not be the same one... if that makes sense

Actually I dont think you can do anything withe 1530, in order for it to be so thin, its all on the board itself, you cant remove it period.

    wobble987, is right.

So, although you CAN'T upgrade it now, it's actually possible that you might be able to do it in the future, depending of what the "next gen" of XPSs would be.

If the laptop design remains the same, and they just add a new cpu/gpu to the mainboard (a.k.a. an intel penryn and a geforce 9650m GS) you could:

    a) Flash your Bios and try to remove your own GPU to add the new one (VERY, VERY RISKY and not recommendable!)

    b) Wait a few months after the release of the new XPS line and then, look for an used/OEM XPS's mainboard which would already come with the new GPU in it (easy but quite expensive!)

So, basically these are your options. ;)

    So much misinformation.

The gfx cards are all soldered in blanket statement is not accurate so if you honestly don't know the answer (like me), don't answer the question.

I do know that with some effort gfx cards can be swapped on some laptops (not sure about this one), but the blanket statement that none can be is incorrect and shouldn't be posted every time the question is asked without something to back it up.

I dunno about your laptop but ive seen the internals of mine and theres no way you can change it. Its soldered in and im guessing it would be the same for other notebooks

Bottom line is you cannot upgrade gpu's like desktops in todays notebooks.. and OP wants to change it to a 8800 which is a big fat NO

I do believe it is accurate for the 1530, someone asked about this particular model a month or so ago to go from an 8400 to an 8600, based on Dells previous models I said that it could be done if he could find the card, upon further research, I found i was in error, to make the notebook as thin as it is, its integrated onto the board itself, the only way to change it is to change the board itself.

The blanket statement does hold some water though, as while it is sometimes techinally possible to upgrade a notebook card, its seldom practical to do so, the parts are hard to find, and usally cost way much more than they are worth, and going from an IGP to a dedicated is not possible as they use a different board alltogether, one with an IGP for intetegrated, and one with a grapgic card connector for discrete solutions. All this information can be found in the stickies.

Alright so let me settle this a bit...
The 1530's vid card is NOT upgradeable. Soldered onto the board.

However Dell was IMHO smart in making some of its laptops' Vid Cards upgradeable some of those are:
The Inspiron 1505, The Vostro 1500, the Inspiron 1520/1521 (NOT Inspiron 1525/1526), the Inspiron 1705(9400), the XPS 1710, the Inspiron 1720, the Vostro 1700, the Precision M6300 all have interchangeable/upgradeable video cards.

Best of the lot would be the 7950 GTS which the 1710 had. FYI, if you attempt to swap them you'll have to desolder the heat pipe on your card and the upgrade card and switch them most likely...

The 1730 is also upgradeable but is of a different form factor to the above. So dont expect an 8800 SLI in a Vostro 1500 anytime soon.
