just wondering what your guys' acceptable fps is when playing mp

i heard that 30+ fps for a first person shooter is good, is this true? or does it depend on the game?

I notice that COD w@w is using some new programming techniques to negate the choppiness of anything below 24 fps. Instead of being choppy and skipping frames, all the animations seems to be there but it will just play more in slow motion if it drops below 24fps giving a nice consistent animation without breaking the immersive illusion.

I have the Toshiba x305 q701 and I have maxed out the single player and manually set the texture to extra, trilinear, and af slider all the way to the right. And it'll hold at 30 fps through the game but at times it'll drop to 20fps, but the difference between COD W@W 20 fps and Crysis 20 fps is a lot smoother believable animation.

In multiplayer though with everything maxed out framerates hold between 40-60 even with 30+ people on screen and special effects galore.

I still think 30+ would be ideal but if I'm not mistaken the new programming technique, if one is being implemented to stop the jitteriness or choppiness below 24 fps hopefully will run future games better on less powerful hardware.

While the capability of the human eye detecting an FPS over 60 can be debated, most screens can show a maximum of 60 FPS (due to a refresh rate of 60 Hz). Unless you have a screen with a refresh rate greater than 60 Hz, the monitor won't display over 60 FPS.

If you are trying to play online you need at least 40+ fps to be able to react accurately

is the fluidity of the game which gets affected at that point, run cod4 or 5 for that matter and lock your fps at 60 and get in a firefight or just simply run around...then lock them at 90 or 125 and do the same thing.. you will see the difference

P.s console commands to lock FPS
/com_maxfps 60 or /com_maxfps 125 .. (default is 90) you can set it up to 250 but most servers will kick you if you past 250

the point is 30 fps is already sufficient to create believable animation. If it's held constant without dropping below this framerate then you suspend disbelief and have an immersive experience. Anything above won't make it any smoother as far as missing animations that your eyes can perceive.

The only reason people want extra fps is because game programmers can't lock it at 30 fps because of many factors such as hardware and how much it has to compute at certain scenes of the game. Because of this framerates fluctuate and to alleviate this the most simple thing to do is buy more powerful hardware to keep the framerates from dropping below 30 fps. It shoots all the way up to 100+ if it doesn't have to calculate as many polygons but actually it's unnecessary as the animation will look the same as 30 fps.

I think we have a misunderstanding of what framerates do. read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

Really, it's more important how smoothly the game runs than the actual FPS, even if you can't detect changes faster than 30fps, if it's 30fps but one frame hangs longer than it should, it will still be noticeable, or if it's 25fps and the frames are all perfectly spaced, and the gameplay is still perfectly smooth, you shouldn't notice a thing.

This is the main reason why people find different frame rates acceptable in different games.
