    Hello,

Just wondering if someone can answer the below question:

1/ comparing an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro [128Mb AGP] (in my desktop computer) to say 256MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go MXM 7600 which graphics card is better. Just wanna make 100% sure I am not stepping back in technology. If the Nvidia card is the way to go, would it run games such as HL2, FEAR, Quake & Doom series better than the desktop card I own?

    Thanks

well, you certainly are'nt going backwards in technology. the 7600 is two generations beyond your 9800. I would certainly expect framerates higher than a 9800 pro in almost every situation also. It might be close. Who knows?

edit: all the components are different in your older desktop vs. newer laptop. it would be hard to isolate the graphics card and determinehow much of a difference there is

In general, desktop GPUs have more power than their mobile counterparts.

But considering the age of your Radeon 9800 Pro, I agree with masterchef that it might be close. It won't be a step back in technology, that's for sure.

Just keep in mind that the 9800 Pro was top of the line at one time, while the go 7600 is not a top of the line GPU.

Chaz needs to get in on this one. He's the resident GPU expert.

I think the power of those 2 gpus is fairly similar (just a guess, don't actually know :p), but the 7600 has more potential as it's newer and supports newer shaders and such.

The 7600 will be faster than your 9800pro!

The 7600 is much faster and will outperform a 9800pro in all games. Simple as! They are not as close as people are suggesting.

The 128MB of RAM on your old 9800 Pro will have been holding it back as well in newer games. You should see a nice boost in framerates with the step up and you'll also have newer features like shader model 3.0 at your disposal.

thanks for all your replies guys...well I would have thought that due to this card having an extra 128Mb it would be a bit faster. (as outlined above)

...if you are interested in the reason why I am seeking to get a notebook is for the below reason: (If you are not interested then don't read on :) )

OK, I'll keep this as short as possible...I recently had a bad motorcycle accident and now I have to spend approximately another (already performed bone grafts and stuff, then got an infection, will have to start all over again...which has taken 4.5 months so far) 10 months healing up and then I can get this external metal frame hanging out of my leg off, which means for most of those 10 months I will be at home in bed (luckily I can still work from home). My reasoning for getting a notebook in the first place is this...I have my study which hosts my gaming rig upstairs and being on crutches it's quite hard to get up the stairs (my house has a fair few stairs).

    Thanks

The Go7600 256MB is going to be a good amount faster than the 9800PRO. I have a 9800XT 256MB in my desktop, and the Go7600 outperfoms it handily in all the newer games, it is a very noticable difference and games certainly are much more enjoyable.

Sorry to hear about your accident. :(

again thanks heaps for the replies...all seems good for the Alienware m5550, the reason I am going to go for the AW over the Dell is that with AW I can get 7600 but on Dell it's a 7400.

    Thanks

The 7400 is still an decent budget card and would perform remarkably close to a 9800Pro in most games actually...
