i might start looking for a laptop again soon. i'm not heavy into gaming, but it would be nice to have the extra cylinders there for when i do. i've done a little research on these 2 cards, but i wanted to get some opinions from actual owners. can these bad boys be oc'ed? what's the drain on battery life? can they be underclocked to conserve battery power? and how well would they play supreme commander? is 4 hrs plus battery life viable when not playing a game? thanks in advance. :)

Not even really a compitition. The 8400GS will conserve more power, of course, but both can be over/underclocked... especially the GDDR3 versions. If you are looking to play games regularly, the 8600GT is your best option on the two. If you are just wanting the occasional game, the 8400GS will do... but not too too well.

I've been playing Supreme Commander on a Dell 1520 with a Core2duo 2.2, 2GB RAM and a 8600m GT. At 1440x900 It runs great, I have all the settings on high with no slowdowns (I'm guessing an avg. of 35fps.. only a guess). The only time I've noticed slowdowns are on the very large maps with more than 2 AI's.

No, only the m1530 has the 8600GT with GDDR3 in the Dell lineup
