    I have a core i3 and 2GB. I don't know the GPU.

Would playing FIFA 09 on my laptop lead to long term consequences?

It shouldn't. Play the game and check your temps with HWMON. FIFA games are more GPU intensive than CPU.

If you don't know the GPU, I first must question whether you have a dedicated card. The min req. for FIFA is a 6600, so integrated likely isn't enough.

Open Device Manager, click on Display Adapters.

that's a very strange question :) It's like asking can I watch bluray on my 1080 plasma, or can I drive a car on concrete instead of asphalt :)
Just play a game, that's what computers are for, otherwise put it in a protective case and never touch it.
yeah, make sure you can run the game first, finding out what gpu you got is more important than what cpu.

    Oh, duh, I'm stupid.

You could just tell us what model/manufacturer it is. Then all will be clear.

lenovo thinkpad edge 14 - business laptop but still

I hear that if I do play games on it, the game will make my computer run slower. I don't want that.

only if you have the game running in the background ALL THE TIME lol. if you play the game and then exit it, it wont make your comp run slower at all.

Spyware, viruses, trojans, stuff liek that will slowdown your computer. All the bloatware from manufacturer and all unnecessary stuff should be deleted and you should clean your comp once in a while from all the garbage.
Games got nothing to do with it. It's just another program that you run, use it and then close it, it just requires more punch from your hardware than lets say photoshop or office, but still it's just another program.

make sure you clean your computer once in a while and I like to format twice a year to really make sure all unnecessary stuff is gone.
