    Hi,

I have recently been writing an application using DirectX for my final year project using my notebook.
However, I have also recently been facing problems with my notebook.
Sometimes my display will show stripes or freeze or my apps will even have artifacts.
I have become worried that I have written something that could break my gfx hardware. :(
Is there any possibility at all?
or likely to be an overheated gpu?

The artifacts are a giveaway, regular GPUs don't have artifacts on screen or show stripes for no good reason.

I install my machine with xp recently, install a fresh dx.
It still gave me that problem.
Previously on vista, i got error that says 'display driver stopped working and has recovered'.

you should get a program to monitor the temps of your gpu.
there are lots of programs that can do that e.g. everest, rivatuner....

try that first and give some feedback on your gpu´s temp.would be good to know what your gpu is ?

The DirectX apps wouldn't break your GPU, though the software COULD be causing the weird artifacts.

More likely is you GPU was damaged due to heat while gaming at some point, or it might just be a faulty GPU.

The artifacting you describe indicates either an overheating GPU or a GPU damaged due to heat.

If it really is damaged, your only option is to send it in for replacement.
