my specs are in my sig.

alright, i been playing counterstrike without problems for a while now, but all of a sudden today im getting random lag (thats what i call it but it might be something else). The visual kinda freezes and then it has the last second of sounds kind of repeat itself about 5-7 times, then it gets back on track and i can play again (if im not dead)

is that a problem with my computer or my internet?

Your first problem is that you are playing counter strike. (just kidding lol)

what kind of connection are you running. if its wireless try hooking up to an ethernet port to see if you have a problem with ur wifi. if its not the router call ur ISP see if theres been any key cables hit by cars in ur hood or town or whatever.

yea I get that sometimes too..Im pretty sure its the internet connection/ internet connection of others in the game. When the latency gets really high it seems to do that then straighten itself out. Its annoying yes, but thats CS:S for yeah! I seriously doubt it has to do with your system.

I know I have never figured this out either. I think it might be a heat issue, because once for no reason my games would crash and the sound would keep repeating (like a gunshot over and over) and I would have to reboot.

But one day it just stopped doing it. Maybe try cleaning the air vents to make sure it's running as cool as possible.

the next time this happens... hit tab IMMEDIATLY afterward and check your ping. sometimes ISPs screw up for a weeek and then they fix it. if your ping jumps to like 500 then back down to 30 real quick, its ur internt. Also, type "net_graph 3" in console, it will show you your Real-time FPS and Ping. take a look at the next time it happens, it could even be the server, in which it would be the Choke that would jump.

See if it happens against [local] bots. If it does, it's not network-related and could be bad RAM, corrupted install, etc.

you might be playing on a server far away, so you may have a high latency. Try nearer servers.

I think it has something to do with the audio driver because it does it on my system too.

Do you use Realtek HD Audio?

wow, thanks for all the replies, and to answer what i can remember of what i read, i sue the realtek audio, ill try lowering the volume because i think this is the loudest ive played with it, i am using the nearest servers i can get, and when you are stuck like that pressing tab doesnt work

also, how do you do that console thing?

This is a separate, well documented problem that started with a patch last fall, related to video cards with less than 256MB of VRAM running texture details at high. I got it a lot on my v2000z's x200M and my 7422GX's Radeon 9600 until I locked down the specific setting causing it (with the help of the Steam forums). It's possible it's been fixed since then - my ThinkPad doesn't have any such problems. Running in DirectX 7 mode or turning texture detail down to medium would fix it, so I suggest the OP try those. To set DirectX mode to 7.0, set the command line parameter "-dxlevel 70" - without quotes, of course.

To access the console, you must first enable it under Options -> Keyboard -> Advanced... -> Enable Developer Console. Then press the "~" key to open the console, and type in "net_graph 5" and press enter.

This was happening on my HEL-80, except every now and then it would completely freeze and required a hard reboot. 90% of the time I would have to use a recovery CD to do chkdsk to get it to boot windows again. Turns out it was my graphics card drivers. I updated to a later version from powernotebooks.com and haven't seen a problem since.

go to your games in steam. Then right click on Counter Strike and click properties. Then set launch options and put in -dxlevel 81

Include the "-" that will set your direct x level lower, and it will stop the hickuping as i called it.

Well with Realtek HD Audio I think it is the cause of these crashes or stutters, the repeating sound crash.

I have had them happen in CS:S and BF2142.

u know i was thinking about it and i think it might have something to do with ur memory recycling. i get the stutter in F.E.A.R. but the weird thing is that after it lags and stutters for like 1 second, the game runs better. i have yet to figure out why but i think that might be a possible culperate. just a suggestion. try messing with ur virtual memory. might help out a bit.

I think you won't be able to tell if its internet or computer (until you fix the problem of course). If you lag in a game, whether it be computer or your connection, your ping will jump.

If it is the computer, when you hit tab it won't work.
edit\\ see if you can hear the hard drive accessing when the freeze occurs

yeah it was the realtek sound driver that was causing the problem. now that i am using the original driver that came with my laptop i can turn the sound up as loud as it can go and i dont get lag anymore.

    thanks for the help
