Try reinstalling DirectX 9
Remember to ublock the file from Properties FIRST!
"Are you sure you want to run this file?" [Yes or No]

yeah says direct x is up to date...like its working now but seems to crash with nvidia settings changes, setting them to default and rebooting got it working....i wish i knew the cause to fix it long term as this is my favorite game

I did some google searching and it seems to be a common problem. One case where someone couldn't run it full screen only windowed (with the exact exception you are seeing), then it worked miraculously later with no changes to anything. It seems to have something to do with the config of the engine/game itself in some cases. It seems like maybe they used an older version of the OGRE open source game engine. Probably just engine bugs that could be fixed with some arcane digging around.
One thing you could try is just going into the nvidia control panel and pinning the game executable to either the integrated graphics or dedicated nvidia graphics. It doesn't look like a very intense game. I would bargain it would play pretty much the same on integrated or dedicated. At least you could use that to see if it's some driver incompatibility with the game engine.JRE84 likes this. -
thanks alot...I tried setting auto select gpu in control panel as well as just switching to integrated...still randomly doesnt open..then I tried installing older drivers ...nothing..installed direct x 9c and the newest..nothing...googled the error with poolians on google and nothing showed up..its like maybe a program that is booting up later or antivirus is getting in the way but I made an exception with mcaffee. so yeah im puzzled..never have I had a random direct x error normally it is consistant and resolveable..

yeah I'm currently looking for a good free anti virus and or firewall.....I used to get comodo
ok so the problem came back and won't load.
solution: run in compatibilty mode windows 95
seems like this is the only solution and it immediately fixed the problem while trying and did not require a reboot...so yeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh pretty happy hopefully this helps someone.
ok I found the solution and problem finally took me a tiny bit of time too figure it out, problem is rivatuner statistics and afterburner...I have no idea why it was causing the issue at random but closing afterburner and running in compatibility mode absolutely fixed this error....so if you run into the problem try turning off msi afterburner and try opening again. seems like it has an issue drawing framerate/stats and running the 2d game/hfm likes this. -

TBH I sort of did that. I used MSMG Toolkit and stripped out all the feces from my W10 Pro 2004 image before installation. Made tweaking afterward a lot easier as well because most of the junk was already gone.

yeah thats not nessessary///just use shutup 10 and easy services optimizer

I did those as well, but they don’t strip unnecessary components from the Windows install like a custom ISO does.
d3d9 error I'll need an expert this time
