Counter-Strike: Source is so much better. They drastically changed the gameplay (for the worse) when remaking DoD:S. It's a very shiny game, but there's no point to aiming because your gunfire goes everywhere.

really? I thought it would be just a plain remake. I liked the original DoD, alot more than CS.

In other words, it's realistic. Try Red Orchestra and DOD will feel like an arcade shooter. I spent a couple of hours playing DOD on this free weekend and I'm not impressed. It looks nice and moves pretty well, and I actually like the gameplay, but as a package it's not very engaging. $5 is a steal, but I have so many better games to play.

Its a free weekend for DoD:S so thats why its under gift with a time limit. I played it yesterday and it didn't seem like my cup of tea. Although at 5 dollars I thought I could do much worse. I recommend everyone thinking about it try it out since its free for the day.

There's a whole 24 hours left of the free weekend it says.

I bought it, added some realism sounds and a high res graphics upgrade. Seems decent and quite fun to me. Easy to get into... just aim and shoot. For 3 euros its not bad..not bad at all.

What games you play? Also is Red Orchestra still populated online or not anymore?

I think this game is so much better than tf 2. I hated how tf2 has a couple overpowered classes, no class with just a plain machine gun, and a completely underpowered sniper.

I haven't dipped into Red Orchestra yet, so I can't comment on that. Red Orchestra takes WW2 realism towards simulation level. I like the nods towards realism in DOD, but it's nothing compared to Red Orchestra. Incidentally, I got that game because it was briefly only $5 on Steam. Haven't had time to get into it, but if I had to choose between these two, I'd tend towards RO.

As far as class-based multiplayer games go, Team Fortress 2 will have me covered for a long while. It's addictive, and contrary to other posters here, I think that it is reasonably well balanced under most circumstances. I like the atmosphere of the game and prefer the pacing and gameplay.

    I have been recently playing:
Half-Life (plus Opposing Force and the rest of it)
    Half-Life 2 (plus episodes)
    Portal
    Sins of a Solar Empire
    Older Tom Clancy games

Games I haven't even had time to play:
    Red Orchestra
    Galactic Civilizations II
    Civilization IV (plus expansions)
    Simcity IV

I've just completed HL1, HL2, HL2 Ep1 and Portal, but I've still got way too many games to play at the moment.

And to the above poster: sniper is my favorite class. What's wrong with it?

the sniper is kinda redundant especially on 2fort. You basically peak out from the second floor and shoot at another sniper on the other side

If the other sniper is any good then you have to take out their sniper so they dont take out your team...

exactly, when i play DoD, the gun becomes so loose after 1 shot!
but i would still get it for $5, and try it if i have not!
    you might like it ;)
other than that, solid graphics and performance

That's one way to play. It doesn't have to be like that. The only time you are absolutely forced to play like that is if the other team has loaded up on snipers or if the battlements becomes the only safe place for a sniper to stand. In which case you can switch to scout, spy, demoman or pyro and clean them out. After a few rounds of that, sniping goes back to being beneficial to the team. Or just go down to the sewers or the main area to help your team. One of the great things about TF2 is that you are free to try different styles of play, among the classes and within a particular class. DOD doesn't have this range or versatility, and neither do most games.

Very true. Having a good sniper on your team can be devastating for the other team. I've recentlly fallen in love with being a sniper in TF2. On some maps its not great as others. But find a nice spot, and you can effectively tip in the balance for your team in a huge way.

A lot of the problems I've seen with people complaining about certain classes and problems is 32 people playing on 2fort. The game wasn't intended or balanced for 32 people especially on the smallest map in the game that often turns into a deathmatch. When I play on maps besides 2fort I feel the game is one of the most balanced and fun games out.

Some people are really good as snipers. People who can kill a scout with one shot have enough power :D Also killing of the other snipers is just to keep yourself preoccupied untill you see a medic ready to deploy an Übercharge.. having an experienced sniper can be a big advantage.
Although i think a good spy is more effective.

It's actually less realistic and less fun. DoD:S has that weird "cloud of bullets" effect from Counter-Strike. Within a cone of fire (it's actually a square), there's an equal propability that a bullet will strike on a certain sport. In real life, a bullet's impact is related to the previous bullet's impact. It's even more noticable in DoD:S because emptying a SMG leaves bullet holes in even the corner of your view even when your crosshairs never pass over those spots. If the 1st person view of the gun reflected bullet impacts, the gun would be whipping around feet at a time.

There was a big gameplay update on the 2nd, and I haven't tried it, so this describes the gameplay from november 2007.

I played during the free weekend and liked what I saw. It's sort of a cross between the CSS/HL2 mod "Insurgency" and TF2. Needless to say, I dropped the 5 bucks on it.

    That's a big "if," isn't it?

I'm just saying a measure of gun inaccuracy built-in makes a lot more sense than the hyper-accuracy of some shooters. It didn't seem perfect in DOD: Source (after all, if I liked it so much, I'd be playing it right now), but the irregular aiming feels more realistic than some other shooters I've played.

    Hated that game.

When your US against the enemy you see the enemy with different weapons, when you pick them up there different too. However when your the enemy its the same M16 stuff the US gets, not the diff weapons the US sees the enemy with..its retarded.

The most popular map is that bridge one, in which everyone tries to get the sniper or rocket launcher. Then its a camping game....once you die, you have to wait for your whole team, objective complete or the most common; time to run out, which takes ages.

The custom weapon stuff never works, I went all the way to rank 16, got the option to customize my weapons, did so and then joined the maps which allow custom special forces weapons. Yet I cant use any of them....its such a screwed up game lol

Yepp! DOD:S is fun its more of a cross between CS:S/TF2 (CS:S + WWII + Control Point maps) had it for a while since it came bundled with CS:S.
