Can someone explain to me what ddr3 is? do I need 3gb of ram for the graphics card to be ddr3?
-
It is a type of RAM (random access memory) here is an explenation of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM DDR3 is simply a faster version of DDR2 RAM. And no it dosen't matter how much RAM you have on the graphics card. Like I said it is a type of RAM not an amount.
-
The RAM is specific to the GPU, so having 3GB of system RAM will make no difference in the functionality of a GPU with DDR3 RAM.
-
ok that clears it up thanks
-
GPUs don't have DDR3 RAM though, they have GDDR3 RAM, which is an undervolted DDR2 that has nothing to do with DDR3
-
That is soo wrong... GDDR3 is a undervolted, optimized version of DDR2. GDDR2 was something between DDR and DDR2. It was used in the First Geforce FX's...

DDR3 is an improvement to DDR2, I dont know how far better it is but I know that 1GB or DDR2 is about £50/$100, while DDR3 tend to be around £150/$300.
At the moment I dont think its really worth it unless your a hardcore gamer that needs an absolutely top spec gaming rig.
ddr3?
