Hi, I just ran 3DMark 06 and i'm crashing out of it at 1640 frames each time.
    Error messages include:

    "IDirect3DVertexBuffer9::Lock failed: n/a (Unknown)"

    and

"IDirect3DDevice9: :present failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)

these are coupled with a frequent error I get in the taskbar which is

Diplay driver NVIDIA WIndows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 285.62 stopped responding and has succesfully recovered)

I only just recently updated to 285.62, but I was getting similar stuff with older drivers too.

So my GPU is screwed, does anyone know why? Is it possible to tell from those errors?

    thanks
    Jonathan

    Hi John

Try reinstalling the driver. Remove the old nVidia driver, then reinstall the latest one. Best of luck.

Make sure you use CCleaner for the removal.

(Slightly OT but your title sounded like a play I would definitely watch, lol)

a card is dead when you dont have an image on the screen anymore or just pure vertical lines.
this sounds like a driver confliction problem.
follow the guide for a manual instal in my sig below.

Jon, what vid card is it? what is your computer?

Check your temps during the test. They may be running too hot. Also reinstall the vid card driver as others have stated

The Nvidia driver has an option for a clean install, it will remove the older driver reboot and install the new one and reboot.

Erroring out at the exact same frame on every run does indeed sound like a software problem, not a hardware one. Try reinstalling the drivers as others have suggested (try the clean install option in the nVidia installer, if that doesn't work try uninstalling followed by CCleaner and Driver Sweeper).

I am also inclined to say it is a software issue. Faulty hardware usually does not give the driver a chance to cover things up, you will see driver faults AND visual artifacts.
